Well after encoding Dumb and Dumber (it was already ripped on my HDD) in Divx5, both with and without MPEG4 options, b-frames, etc (but no psy options), here's a quick screenshot. No b-frames top pic, b-frames bottom pic. Post processing set to 2. Notice the CPU utilization difference for playback. As far as quality goes, the b-frame enabled version seems to show more fine details, text etc, sharper. Filesize predicted by gknot was: 1 130 070KB. Actual filesize for the No b-frame and b-frame versions were: 1 133 000KB and 1 132 772KB, respectively.

Because the differences in quality are so minute, I post in png format, jpg tends to introduce additional artifacts.

So, without any further preamble, here you are:

I can post more screencaps if tou'd find them useful. Any advise how to "properly" produce screencaps at specific frames would also be useful.

EDIT, Here are some more caps, this time XVid and DIVX5 with bframes et al. Bitrate was the same, avg of 800. I deliberately chose scenes that show DIVX at its worst, through most of the move, the differences are too small to notice a difference.

Hey thanks for your testing results.
btw, did you feel that divx5 has better picture than 3.11alpha SBC?

Heck I thought Divx 4 had a better picture

sbc is outdated...

Screenshots: With your movie open in Nandub, move the slider over to the frame you want to take a screenshot of, and press ctrl-1. This will copy your input frame into the clipboard. Paste into your graphics program of choice.

It's also under the Video menu in Nandub.

SBC might be outdated but nandub still provides the best control down to the smallest details over any codec available today.

simply wrong ! the only codec, that you can control with nandub is and will ever be the good old divx 3.11 .. and this is a really outdated codec !

and xvid is going to offer the same options as nandub by time, but with a much better core and much more features !

Who cares if SBC is outdated? It's certainly proven itself over time right? The end results are what matters right? Don't make the mistake of counting SBC out of the picture so fast...it would be a mistake;)

I think you misunderstood. Of course nandub only provides control over DiX3.11, that's what it is for. What nandub offers is control over the codec it is dedicated to a degree that no other codec/app combination can offer today.

>and xvid is going to offer the same options as nandub by time,

That's right, by time.
I don't doubt XviD will be impressive when it stabilizes,
but I live in the now, and use the tools that are available today.

I guess you haven't tried any of the latest builds in the last few weeks? What tools are missing that you were looking for?

I used some of the later (27 Feb and after, 3rd March now) , and I'm experiencing some nasty freezes. I had the opportunity to talk with Koepi about this in the IRC channel, and he had no explaination, he took my clip and was going to look at it. So you might say that the jury is still out.

About options, I'd want something more like nandubs anti-shit control.
Which has been a lifesaver for me many times.

A lot boils down to experience as well, I know every nock and cranny of nandub and can simply perform better with it, so it really doesn't matter if XviD has more potential if I at my current point cna do better with another codec.

PS. I also got a little too much "squareness" in another encode (which also had a frezee, with XviD) while the same level of smoother looked kickass in nandub. I say again: I want XviD to bet 3.11 because that means I can do better stuff, but I feel personally that we're not there yet.

To me, your XviD screen shots look way better than your divx5 screen shots...

@Prosper

I think a person would have to be blind to say your Divx5 screenshots look better than the Xvid. LOL

You definitely have something screwy. The Xvid quality should look better than Divx 5 but not that much better:D

Totally agree with MaTTeR. Maybe it's a keyframe and you set someting like 50+% keyframe boost in XviD. And it may be screwed frame too (I got these with quarter pixel on too). The diference just can't be that big.

Like I said, I deliberately chose frames where the quality difference was greatest. The first cap was during the flying color intro, very high motion, is usually killer on codecs, and XVid really does give much better results (but its moving so fast you can hardly tell). And the other scene, if you set brightness up in the DIVX5 post processing settings, looks almost exactly the same (And so does the rest of the movie). I also made sure that the frames I grabbed were _not_ keyframes, in either codec.
