DivX Pro encode begun

Hi,

Already did an encode of Independence Day Special Edition using the basic version of DivX 5.0

Now am doing it again, with DivX Pro 5.0. I'm using all the special features, b-frames, etc....

But same bitrate, 1000kps, same quant. max 12, min 2

We'll see how the file-size is any different than basic DivX 5.0

I can already tell the encoding speed is down from basic 5.0, I think it's probably the bi-directional encoding. I'm getting around 8fps or so on the 1st pass. That's about a third (33%) less than the basic 5.0 encode.

Hopefully the 2nd pass will speed up like it did with the basic 5.0

I'm going to bed, however, so I'll let you know in the morning how the filesize turned out, and post some more screenshots for you to check out.

Well, I am awake now.

According to my log file, the 1st pass took around 7 1/2 hrs, which means it was running around 8fps.

Keep in mind this is DivX 5.0 Pro, running on a 800 Thunderbird. I had all the goodies turned on.

Right now the 2nd pass is around 40% done, and is running around 12-13fps.

So it is confirmed, the 2nd pass in both DivX 5 and DivX Pro are much faster than the first pass.

File size seems a bit smaller in DiVX Pro, but of course only 40% is done...we'll see how it looks.

I'll post some screenshots comparing the two....I am encoding the same movie, Independence Day.

i also get this fps drop down with the pro version, but i only get 9-10 fps on an athlon xp 1600. if you get 8 fps on an athlon 800, why i only get max 10 fps? i also activated the 3 mp4 tools. resolution is 704x..., sharp bicubic resize and little noise.

with the basic codec i get around 20-24 fps.

i hope there will be a significant difference in quality.

2nd pass is complete.

It took just over 4hr, 20min, which for my machine is an average framerate of about 12-13fps.

Obviously the 2nd pass speed up is a feature of both DivX 5.0 and DivX Pro.

The difference in filesize was small, with the DivX 5.0 coming out to 1075MB and the DivX Pro encode almost exactly 1GB

This was done encoding Independence Day Special Edition, which is 2hr, 35min long.

Settins for both were 1000kps, min quant 2, max quant 12

DivX Pro had all the new stuff turned on....quarter pixel, motion calc, etc....

Both had pre-processing turned off, and both used normal psycho-visual-blah blah blah

The tests look remarkably good. DivX 5.0 turned out a superb encode with artificats showing up only a few places in the entire movie. Mostly when there were things like smoke or large flames....

DivX Pro with the b-frames was slower, but that was to be expected. It was smaller, although not greatly so, but that could have been influenced by the quarter-pixel feature, which I've heard can increase file size.

All in all, I'm satisfied with both versions, so I'll probably keep using DivX 5.0 Pro. I like the support for b-frames, which X-vid should have and I'll probably go back to Xvid when it does support it. Until then, DivX Pro is the best game in town...

I'll attach a zip file with some screen shots, and hopefully the attachment will be validated soon....

I am doing my first pro encode now

Joan of Arc (2hrs 31mins) at 1000Kbps with only B-Frames (for X-Card support - not got one but planning to get one.)

Getting 10-12fps first pass (720*320 with enhanced bi-linear filter)
VFAPI frameserving into vDub from DVD2AVI

Looking for 2CD rip but will probs get a 1 1/5 CD rip!!!

Forgot to say i have a 1GHz T'Bird at 1200 with 392Mb ram with XP

Again, I draw your attention to teh shot where the plane is blowing up. Note the exhaust of the plane to the left. Through the effects of teh jet exhaust you can still see the edge of the alien spacecraft and the fin of the plane.

Tell me that DivX 3/4 wouldn't have blocked that to hell and back!!...

I finished my rip

Accord it VDubs logs it took 5hours for the first pass and 3hrs 47mins for the 2nd pass. This is B-frames on a 1200MHz T'Bird

The video looks great but i cant get the audio in sync (BeSweet then wavemp3 and multiplexed with Virutal Dub) Also the video seems to 'Fast Forward' During playback and makes the whole thing look odd.

I am not very happy about this esp. as the video looks sweet.

mux your audio in nandub... vdub can only handle cbr mp3 not vbr or abr

Not used Nandub since 4.10 came out (Used to do SBC this way).

I havent done a vbr mp3 before but as size wasnt important I went with it.

BTW the video came out as 1054MB which when put back though DivX4 bitrate calculator comes out as 986kbps (encoded at 1000) so its 15Mb undersized.

Looks good (all i have to do now is split it and burn it).

If you try an mux a mp3 in vdub thats not CBR then it will still mux but the synce is totally off...

Same problem with me how did ya fix it? What Player do you use to play the Avi's? I muxed with nandub but when I use the slider to seek video on any player i lose synch?
