The advertising and pay model being adopted for DivX5 is by FAR the best possible solution. There's a cut down version for people who don't want to look at ads or pay, which can appeal to amateurs. If you want a more advanced solution, you can pay for it. If you want the more advanced solution but don't want to hand over your hard-earned jack, you can get the ad-supported version. This keeps EVERYONE happy. If you don't want to support ad-ware, then just spend the $30 for the full version or get the lite version. Either way, there's nothing for you to complain about here.

If that gets on your nerves I have a free and completely legal way to block these ads but still use the Pro edition: Install either ZoneAlarm or Tiny Personal Firewall and when the application GAIN_TRICKLER_3102.EXE wants to connect to the Internet you create a rule that will block the connection forever. They have to get money back somewhere for the additional costs.

Adware costs you your privacy. I refuse to have a program sitting on my computer reporting on my web-browsing habits to a company that does not have a Privacy Policy on its webpage. That is a blatent disregard of my privacy and for DivxNetworks to laugh it off as nothing is a crock of shit. I understand the need for revenue. I understand the the desire to release a free version of the Pro edition. I understand advertising. I do NOT understand an alliance with a company that makes its money off collecting the personal info of users. This decision has pretty much killed my respect for DVN.

And you don't have a firewall installed yet? Wow, are you in for a surprise...

Just get a firewall and block all ads and cookies that you don't want, and stop whining. At least Gator doesn't "stealth" their techniques, like so many others do.. That's why you probably want to install a firewall straight away. You wouldn't believe the amount of stuff that goes on without you knowing it.

Besides, the asking price of $30 is not really lethal, is it? Come on, professional encoders usually retail for several thousand dollars (CCE springs to mind), so $30 is really a friendly price, I would say.

But then again, you don't have to use it, you know. There are alternatives.

Really, I do not like that a resident program could be able to send anything I do not control from my machine. Moreover, there is nothing about the use of these data. It is not only a matter of privacy, but a security issue too. When you will have received hundred of spams in your mail box, you will reconsider this.

can we stop this please? I posted instructions that will ensure that not only will the adware not launched, but it will also never be able to connect to the internet... you can even remove it if you keep a single registry key... is that so bad? no person that has complained has truly understood why the adware is there in the first place.. it's the damned mpeg-4 licensing fees. Apple has not release QT6 so far because of this.. DXn now has.. but had to find a way to cover their costs.

divx3 is illegal.. I think we can all agree on that. xvid's license says educational use only.. of course we don't do that.. but in a legal way that makes it illegal, too. Same goes for lame where nobody pays mp3 licensing fees either. While we as private users we don't have to worry about this too much (and most people don't even know it but go flaming DXn anyways), corporations do have to worry.

And the whole "you owe me something" attitude that's being shown about DivX5 really sickens me. Nobody owes you a codec. Absolutely nobody. Take it or leave it!

I've disabled the ads and am now encoding to find out if DivX5 really is better than its predecessor.. and then face off the best parameters against XviD and SBC. That is a much more useful activity than flaming around.

Case closed.. I don't want any more of this on this forum.
