any opinions on divx 5?

Something I discovered:

When you load a divx5 video into virtualdub and move forward along the keyframes you get different frames when moving back.

So can it be that the B-frames are indicated as keyframes?

And also, the size prediction seems to work pretty well; I did two anime episodes and both came out with exactly 233 MB.

Another episode I encoded was supposed to have a seize of 350 MB, but only got 270 MB, even @ 3000kbps. I then used sharper resizing and added warpsharp so the final seize was 290 MB. I think the codec was already saturated.

Using B-frames+divx5 gives better quality/compression than Xvid or Nandub but the annoying thing is that the colours are washed-out and the film is blurrier. Speed is not so important for me.
I guess when b-frames will be implemented in xvid the quality will be much closer to the source than divx5 even in 1cd encodes.

Because with divx5 you can't set a quantizer lower than 2 it is likely that for easy encodes you will get undersized rips because quant 2-2 will be used for all the frames. So you will have to raise the resolution or use sharpen filters to reach the desired filesize.
On the other hand with Xvid you can use quant = 1 which 99.9% of the times will guarantee that you won't get undersized rips.

Acaila said any codec not any encoder, but I agree with you. There are a lot of people making really bad 2 CD rips, and I'm not saying they are all Flaskers.

The results came out, and rather well I think. Divx 5 performed great, giving quality about the same, I also didnt notice any color washout or anything, and came out at 40mb smaller than my encode with the same settings in SBC. Its a pity that I wont be using divx5 simply because the playback filter forces itself on divx 3.11 (divx4 i couldnt care less about, IMO its the bottom of the bunch)

Check my post above for settings. I simply set the bitrate for divx5 the same as the max bitrate for my divx3 sbc encode, ran all the same filters, and set the same DRF (called quantisizer in divx5). The only real difference (aside from the fact that they are two different codecs) was activating the b-frames and GMC. Quality is about the same. I need to review it further, but I have uninstalled the codec and do not want to reinstall it until I find a way to keep its grubby hands off of divx 3.11 playback.

Anyway, my final opinion is that divx5 is what divx4 should have been, but whether it is a replacement for 3.11 SBC is still up for grabs, as one test dont say it all.

Finally, here is my philosophy in encoding: if it needs the bits, let it have em. If it dont need the bits, dont let it have em. Thats why I like the min/max bitrate SBC offers. However, I am always open for a better option. At least once it gets its hands off my divx 3 playback.

When I use to encode with Divx3.11, i would get 24 bit color. However when i encode with divx 5.0. i get 16 bits. does anyone know how to change this to 24bits?????????

I don't know if you've ever noticed this, but if you encode with DivX4.12 you'll also get 16bit (when using VDub in fast-processing).

This is normal, and in no way tells you the actual color depth of the movie. In fact you can just leave it like this unless you need to merge it with a movie part that's 24bit. But that's another story.
