View Full Version : Anyone buying DivX Pro 5.0?

Hi,

Just saw this on the website.

30 bucks seems kinda steep, but I did download the ad-supported version for free.

When I get done testing out the free version, I'll do a speed comparison with DivX Pro and see what the big difference is.

nope, not a chance, even if it does wonders with my backup's. I'd rather deal with downloading Ad-aware and using the ad-supported version.

BTW: check out the poll on Divx.com, aparently they are corporate sellout bastards! I can see everyone's point of view.

I wanted to buy the pro version until I read:
"It enables you to use the software on that computer, but not on other computers."

Not that I wanted to use two or three PC for encoding, but I fequently chance something in my main system (even cpu and/or mainboard), so like I see it up to now I would have to buy a new license,... :(

I just purchased it this morning, if not only to support this format. Before i get flamed like there's no tomorrow, i have already donated amounts to several free pieces of software licensed under the GPL, as requested by their authors. DivX 5.0Pro isn't quite the same thing of course, but for me it's close enough. Furthermore, the challenge and enjoyment i get from backing up my DVDs is enough to justify this cost, to support this format is simply an added bonus. I must say that $30 USD is a little steep, but it's not exactly a huge deal IMHO.

I'll gladly give them the $30 once if it does what it says but the first time I get screwed in system maintenance by the activation then it's out of there.

I bought it too, wanted to test it myself, and there is no way I will ever allow addware on my pc.

Anyway my test results so far seem extremly disappointing.
I am dooing 1-pass quality based encoding (quality=100) with both standard and pro version, that way I should be able to use filesize as a objective measure for codec preformance. But so far it looks like the pro version comes out approx 5% larger.

I would be very happy if someone could preform a simmilar test, to verify my results.

*edit*
Seems like I made a mistake with the resolotion when setting up the the pro version test. SORRY

No chance of this ol chap paying:)

I'm curious about the ad version frankly...just hoping it's not another spyware like Gator.

Funny you should mention that, because it does in fact use Gator.

LMAO, that's exactly the program it installs: GATOR!! :D

Anyways, it's easy to remove, and a stand-alone codec will probably be available all over the net in a few days...

Your kidding me? Guess I wasn't paying attention during the install. I suppose this also explains the open ports I'm seeing after running a netstat from a command prompt:angry:

I guess consider yourself warned folks.

Yeah, Gator has got to be the worst POS software ever created...

Just open up Task Manager, and close the programs. (there's 2 I think, something like Gain, CME and Gator) Then go to program files/common files/ and delete CME II and Gain (or Gator).

The Pro license is for a single computer license, that's true. But there is a tolerance built into the software so that you shouldn't have problems if you need to rebuilt your machine from time to time. Give it a chance, and write us if you have problems.

Cheers.

The stupid "Gain_trickler_3102" (=Gator) can be blocked with Zonealarm. But nevertheless I don't like unnecessary processes using memory and cpu time - even if it's only 0.01%

Addaware 5.62 does a nice job removing all of it in seconds :-)

Someone over on AVScience reported it stops working if you remove Gator.

Anybody know if Gator is one of those aps that generates a lot of interupts, making choppy DScaler and DVD (and DivX) playback?

I removed everything it installed except the codec itself, and it works fine using VirtualDub... Also deleted the Gator registry entries.

There's no way I'm keeping that ressource-hogging spyware on my computer. :) When I went to close it in Task Manager, Gator was like using 20MB of ram.

@trbarry

I can confirm it(Divx5) still works after deleting all the files and deleting all registry entries. Before that 2 or 3 different apps were open in the task manager not to mention the TCP/IP ports being used in the background.

I don't mind popups but Gator is the biggest peice of spyware on the market. IMO its just garbage. To bad Divx Networks couldn't have come up with a better solution.

I've heard on Ars that as long as you leave gator's registry
keys , codec will work(you can safely remove gator itself).
But I'm still not gonna install it.
NO to GATOR.

6 or 7 posts above your Sugar Daddy pretty much spells it out.

Dali Lama
5th March 2002, 07:02
Yes...but how do I know what and where it installed it and where the registry items are?

Sugadaddy
5th March 2002, 07:05
Not that I support this sort of thing, but just for your information, a pirated Pro version has been released. Don't ask me where to get it though.

MaTTeR
5th March 2002, 07:08
You can search the registry. Edit->Find

I don't even think you need to clean the registry. Just delete the files that were pointed out earlier in this thread.

When i first saw $30..i didnt think it was that much...and then i converted it to aussie dollers (~&60), then i realised how much of a rip off that is. Until i hear that its 'SOOOOO much better' than any other codec, then I probably wont use it anyway, and when i do use it, its not like I will pay for it (do i pay for any program i use?!).

A little question just popped up into my mind: If I buy a Personal Version of DivX5 and DivX5.x comes out d I have to buy a (complete)new license or will there be some sort of 'upgrade possibility', so that might not have to pay anything or u just won't have to pay the full price next time,...?

good piece of software to have anyway

This isn't defined ahead of time. Basically, every time we do a new release, we can either update the Product ID (in which case you would need to pay again), or not update the Product ID (in which case you would NOT need to pay again).

The current plan is to have 5.x updates be free for registered users, but the next major release (6.0) will probably require another purchase. But that's just the current plan. It definitely may (and probably will) change.

Well, this $30 fee situation sounds rather weird... It would have been far more efficient to reduce the speed of the codec, or even display the logo of DivX and a reminder in all clips encoded with the "free" codec... However putting Gator and Cydoor (yes as well, check your registry and you 'll find out...) dubious functionality ad programs (are you really convinnced they are simply ad/spam and not spyware as well ?)just puts these guys directly into my blacklist... And ethics discussion would be pretty useless at this poin as well, are we goign to pay the one who helps us "steal" DVD and captured material (for let's face it, this is what the vast majority of us is doing...) ? There is the story of the new standard which may replace mpeg-2... LOL I have just encoded my first movie with DivX 5 Pro and the results have been more than disappointing, or better not as impressive as to merit a $30 fee, over the previous two free codecs... Furthermore, are you willing to pay for functions (see psychovisual enhancements...) that are being advertised, exist in the feature list as functional and only in a brief readme note they actually admit that they may cause corrupt output ? When you pay for your software don't you expect to get what you are being told and most of all be confronted with sincerity at all levels... Can divx.com explain why most of us get terrible atrifacts using the "new" functions of the "new" codec ? I am terribly sorry but to me, speed improvements over an old free codec do not merit absoilutely any fee... Especially for a company supporting ad/spam/spyware software...

The Codec do not use Gator at all, it use GAIN, witch is maintained by Gator Corporation but it not related at all to Gator.
There is no application that fill the form and do other stuffs like remember your passwords. With Gain you just have some pop-up (http://www.gatoradvertisinginformationnetwork.com/about/) as low as 5 pop-up a week !
I say it again you get as low as 5 pop-up a week, this is less than surfing the web for 10 minutes !

This is the first time advertisement actually pays for someting I want !

And about quality the best setting I've find are with b frames, Gmc, Psy normal and 2 passes, it's clearly sharper and less blocky that DivX 4.12 and XviD, not to talk about the WM8 I encode daily for living !

theReal
6th March 2002, 01:03
Mystion, you name it.

It is not yet a fully functional codec. They want us to evaluate and then buy it? I evaluated it and already banned it from my system in exchange for the 4.12 version because I don't use a codec that screws up tv captures and offers settings that don't work. I don't even want the free divx 5 right now... I have to hear a lot of very positive things about divx 5 until I consider installing it again!

I wouldn't mind some pop-ups, but it has a background process running all the time. I hate unnecessary resource-wasting background processes. I never use programs that need unstoppable background processes, except the very essential ones like Zonealarm.

trbarry

Well, I just paid for it. I hope that does not make me politically incorrect. ;)

I even successfully activated it after a few refusals due to an errant cut-n-paste. I don't know whether I messed up myself or if it doesn't display the activation key right in the browser using large fonts. But the follow-up email corrected it.

Yeah, I'm going to get Linux, I guess it doesn't have any processes!

I said "unnecessary". No process will run in my windows which is not needed to run windows. Even some of microsoft's "system" processes are terminated as far as it is possible. Of course there will be something running - if I wanted NO processes at all, I had to format c: and turn the computer off...

As I said before, a few pop-ups may be a "fair" "price" to pay over somehting useful and free... However, apart from the resource wasting that Gator (or any other program released under it...) imposes us, there is absolutely no gurantee that it is not spyware... This you people must understand is of extreme importance... I do not think any of you would like people hacking into your computer, would you ? Afterall, as I said there are different ways of protecting ones software and making people pay for it... Given the simplicity with which you can get rid of the adware, I do not really think this will work well for divx.com... Another question regarding the free upgrades for registered users... Would there be an ad-support version of every major upgrade of DivX 5 Pro, or just the ones who bought the codec can benefit from them... For if it is the latter case true, this is one of the most pathetic marketing tricks I 've ever encountered... You give people a free non-fully-functional-non-optimized codec, which in my opinion should have stayed a beta or even an alpha in its current state including ads (just to squeeze off a little more out of the users...) and then give the actual functioning codec only to registered users... This does not really sound free at all...

Mystion,

Yes there will be an ad-supported version for every upgrade of DivX 5.0 Pro, not just for those who decided to pay for it. I think like 5 people...me and 4 people who bought it to crack it. :) Our goal was to truly find a way to provide DivX 5.0 Pro for free while being able to keep feeding our faces. Pathetic marketing trick? Well, it was more of; how do we push this technology hard and get it into the hands of users that matter most to our (DARC) team. Sure it still has work and it is very "alpha", however if you take it for a proper test spin (use Q) you'll see it has good potential. Lots of bugs to fix, but more importantly make the features work as great as they do in Q just as good with VBR (1pass/2pass, etc.).

So to answer your question, those that paid the $30 have the EXACT same version you do. NO DIFFERENCE except for the ads.

my ass paid for it TWICE!

I accidently clicked it twice with a refresh.. trying to get a refund for the second purchase.

not that I really test or make use of divx 3.11, 4.12 or 5.0

when I first tried divx and realize that I can get WAY better video in higher resolution and lower bitrate than MPEG1/VCD I was WOW!

I don't mind supporting the DivX develpment team. beside aren't divx.com have to pay $.50 for every d/l of mpeg4? since I think divix is good codec.. but to tell ya the truth It was an Impulse purchase when I was reading their website. Divx5 was really hyped so I bought it blindly :(

also I can't stand these ad popup/spyware crap.
