What's new in this version
--------------------------

**Features of DivX 5.0**

* Compatibility with all versions of DivX video content. DivX 5.0 can play
every version of DivX video ever created, from prior to 3.11 alpha to the
brand new DivX Pro 5.0.

* AMD optimizations. Version 5.0 is fully optimized for AMD Athlon and Athlon
XP processors.

* Faster two-pass encoding. The second pass of two-pass encoding is now up to
30% faster than DivX 4.12. The second pass makes use of motion vector
information calculated by the first pass.

* Smaller file sizes. DivX 5.0 is capable of producing equivalent visual
quality at up to 15-20% smaller file sizes, when compared to DivX 4.12. File
size savings will vary depending upon the nature of the video content.

* MPEG-4 compatibility. DivX 5.0 can decode MPEG-4 Simple Profile, MPEG-4
Advanced Simple Profile, and H.263 video (all levels). It is also able to
encode fully MPEG-4 Simple Profile compliant video (ISO/IEC 14496-2).

* DivX(tm) MPEG-4 file format. Full support (encoding and decoding) for the brand
new MPEG-4 based file format that replaces the venerable AVI file format.

* Advanced support for existing encoding applications. All the new features of
DivX 5.0 work in todayÕs existing content creation and encoding applications
without requiring new versions of the applications.

* Reusable encoding profiles. Version 5.0 allows you to save profiles of
encoding settings and reuse them over and over. You can also trade encoding
profiles with other users.

* Quick configuration CLI. DivX 5.0 includes a command line interface for
advanced users.

* Patent-pending rate control algorithm. This new version of DivX introduces a
new and improved rate control algorithm, improving visual quality.

* Improved encoding algorithms. Includes special encoding algorithms that are
specifically tuned to pans, fades, zooms, explosions, etc., improving quality
and increasing compression.

* Psychovisual modeling. Support for advanced psychovisual modeling during
encoding, a technique that takes into account knowledge about how the Human
Visual System (HVS) works to compress moving video images into much smaller
sizes without a loss of video quality.

it possible to playback exactly the same file on a variety of different

how did they manage to implement b-frames into a linear avi editing app like vdub? i thought they needed an extra tool for this task?

p.s.: is it just my paranoia, or is divx 5.0 encoding a lot slower? (could be because of b-frames)

I'm getting around 13-15 fps encoding the first pass here.

I'm using an AMD Thunderbird 800 with 448 MB Ram.

Nothing else is running right now, seems speed wise it is same or little faster than DivX 4.xx on my machine.

They say the real speed increase is in

1) AMD machines

2) Second pass uses first pass more efficiently, so second pass is a lot faster.

Ran a very short test on the basic DivX 5, here's what I ended up with:

System: Athlon XP 1700+, Asus A7V266-E motherboard, 1GB RAM.

Settings: all set to the default (780 kbps), except max keyframe interval of 120.

Re-Encode a 352x240 29.97fps MPG video using DivX5 in VirtualDub. 7335 frames.
Pass 1: 76 seconds / 98 fps. (audio direct stream)
Pass 2: 59 seconds / 124 fps. (audio direct stream)
Pass 2: 90 seconds / 81 fps (compress layer 2 audio to 192 kbps MP3)
Size: 23,173K


Re-Encode the same 352x240 29.97fps MPG video using DivX4 in VirtualDub. 7335 frames.
Pass 1: 74 seconds / 99 fps. (audio direct stream)
Pass 2: 73 seconds / 100 fps. (audio direct stream)
Pass 2: 105 seconds / 70 fps (compress layer 2 audio to 192 kbps MP3)
Size: 22,240K


So DivX 5 is nearly the same speed on first pass analysis, but is 15-25% faster on final encode.

File size (probably not as useful from a small test):
Exact @780kbps: 23,862 K
DivX5 - 97% of exact
DivX4 - 93% of exact

Unless the 780kbps is x1000 instead of x1024, in which case:
Exact @780kbps: 23,303 K
DivX5 - 99.44% of exact
DivX4 - 95% of exact

@Colargol: B is for Bidirectional (prediction). The frame can be reconstructed from frames after it. It improves compression, so is always good to have it.
DivX5 is about as fast as (or a little better than) DivX 4.12, but I really don't care about this. I think quality it's the most important and I don't know if can beat XviD. The image is less blokier, but at the same time is smoother, less details. Qualitywise DivX is going the Microsoft way (at least I had the same impression with WMV8). Anyway the image doesn't seem to be as blurred as in DivX4, but as I said is smoothered.
BTW: Please take this as my humble opinion and don't curse me if you don't agree.

Why is this dam'ned codec playing back *ALL* DivX files?
I want to decode my 'old' DivX 3 files with the DivX3 directshow filter :(
The installer didn't even ask for it!
I think, this is hitchhiking the registry *AGAIN* :mad:
Do they never learn?
Now i don't like to test this bummer anymore...

Time to continue with XviD :D

I suppose I never bought the hype so for me it isn't disappointing.

Speed is the same in general and the picture quality is still soft compared to SBC or Xvid. Run a test with todays build of Xvid and then compare it to your Divx 5 Pro clip. Results will speak for themselves. Oh well<sigh>

I totally agree with Acaila though...where the $%^* is filesize prediction? What were they thinking? Also, playback isn't smooth. Seems to be a problem with the player stopping at B Frames. Several reports of this using various players:confused:

EDIT- Playback of Divx 4.x movies look like crap with the new 5.0 filter. Argh! Anyone know how to fix this off hand? Reinstall the Div3 and 4 codec?
