I have been using TMPGEnc for a while as a means of getting 3DStudio MAX animations to MPG2....but I have a couple of questions.

I render from Max at 720x576 25fps either Huffy avi or Targa files depending if I need to use Premiere for video editing etc.

I try to feed TMPGEnc by either frameserving from Premiere or with an uncompressed avi....so good so far!

The problem is, that the quality out of TMPGEnc at Pal DVD 8K CQ is not as good as I expect...motion is fine but detail is lost, the edges get a little fuzzy, writing becomes illegible.

So, am I encoding out of Max correctly, size/file type?

Can I improve on quality out of Premiere?

Am I missing something in TMPGEnc?

Thanks

Based on a what a few other posts say, the latest versions of TMPGEnc have been creating unusually fuzzy output. I think 2.51 was said to be okay by one forum member, but it might be worth a try to use 2.0 or a pre-2.0 version. I can get any version to you once my new computer parts come in.

Otherwise, on the quantizer matrix part of the options, see if the "reduce block noise" option is checked. At higher bitrates this is pointless.

Thanks gft,

As it is I have 12a onwards on my system...I'll try a comparison of one of the earlier releases against the latest.

Has anyone done a direct comparison study between the releases?

If so, which is rated as the best?
