View Full Version : How do you get those screen shots???

I was just trying out the different resizing filters, and trying to play around with the smoothing, and deringing values. I would like to compare the videos of the GKnot resizing filters, side by side.
Does anyone know how Doom9 got those screen shots for his codec comparison? I know it would be very easy to just hit PrintScreen, but how do you get it to capture the exact same frame each time?

Virtual dub can save to clipboard the input or output frame, look in video menu
also irfan wiev can save a frame out of the movie it is playing.

I loaded the given avisynth scripts in VirtualDub and captured the frame via CTRL-1... that way you get the effects of the filters, too.

I found that old thread about capturing frames from videos files.
I'm now using vdubmod and shift-1 to save the current frame to bmp or png.
Is there a way to make that task a bit more automated?
like the ability to give a list of frames to extract fo pictures files with their frames number in the filename etc..?

Yes. In vdubmod, use the "File...Same Image Sequence" command.

What I understood about this function is that it's extracting the frames that you selected in the progress bar:
that means for example: from frame 100 to frame 300.
but it's all contiguous frames isnt it?
I was more thinking of extracting a list of specific frames (not contiguous thus the idea of having a list of frames numbers to extract) to be able to compare the same frames from different codecs.

let me quote from the codec comparison (I believe that it is necessary to give people all the info required to reproduce the tests on their own) All files were reviewed using Media Player Classic as it can play back AVIs and RV9 files (also QT by the way). Furthermore, the player can forward to any frame in the video which literally saved me days when making screenshots. Thank you Gabest for making such a great player
That should answer your question..

Thanks Doom9!
but I might look stupid again :D
Once you ve got the required frame displayed in mpc how do you simply extract the frame to a png or bmp file?
I went through the introduction of your your last codec comparison but I couldnt find anything related with the way of extracting the frames...
poor me!
I also made searches through the forum but nothing about that particular method came out of it...
thanks in advance!
and sorry if it'a already been said:(

Just go to the frame you want to copy. Press alt-PrintScreen (to copy it to the clipboard) and paste it in Corel/Adobe photopaint.

I set SnagIt 6 (screenshot utility) to monitor the clipboard and then just copy frame function in Vdubmod and SnagIt automaticly takes the captured image and saves to JPG or whatever etc.
It worked really well...
cheers

Mystiqq, you dont need a capture utility for just saving..
while CTRL+1/2 will save to the clipboard,
SHIFT+1/2 will save directly to a file

@billou2k: after getting the frame in mpc, I used hypersnap to capture the player window content and save it as a bmp. Of course, printscreen will also work, but hypersnap is definitely very useful (I use it for all my screenshots) as it has many capture options and you're not forced to capture the entire screen and cut out what you're interested in.. instead you capture only what you're intersted in in the first place.

I am having the same problem. I can use the GOTO feature of Media Player Classic by Gabest, but PrintScreen doesn't work when you are using overlay. I have seen others say to turn off overlay if you are using the regular Windows Media Player, but I never use that. So I can go te the correct frame in MPC, but no PrintScreen. How did you do it Doom?

you guys ever try out mv2player? It has a comic creator function which allow you to specify let say every "100th" frame snap a picture, and save it with the frame number to a long list of picture format of your choice including quality settings. Furthermore, it even creates an html page to display your captures as well. This is the coolest capture setup I've seen up to now.

@wing1: thanks for the tip i had a look at m2v player. It's quite a nice feature but the only problem for me is that I dont need to capture a frame every x : I'd like to have the possibility of choosing a list of frames I want to extract.
@doom9: Ok I think I get it this time. I was just thinking there was
another way of doing things more automatically as described just before. But well I'll do it that way. It'll still take me more time to review all the shots than extracting them;-)
And just to confirm: png is lossless whatever the compression ratio we
use isn't it? It just works about the same way as zip or rar does?
@sumpm1:I think changing the display device may help you:
in mpc : view/options/playback/ouptut video : try vmr9
It might work as capturing with printscreen didnt cause any problem for me in that mode.
Moreover it wont hurt you using vmr9 as classic overlay mode is hardware limited and if for example you ve got a matrox or ati card your horinzontal overlay resolution is halved when your screen resolution is >1600*1200 60 hz

I had a try with hypersnap and mpc in vmr9 to capture frames in 100% size (of course) but at the end I've got frames a few pixels bigger than their actual size (I've got 642*273 instead of 640*272)
The other thing is that the content is defindetly blurrier than what vdub shows me.
I also tried capturing video rendered in overlay mode rather than vmr9 but mpc crashes in that mode for some reasons.
I just find a bit odd that codecs struggle to keep as much details as possible and at the end they are all blurred anyway when watched through a player? (I understand it's filtered when resized in a window bigger than the original size but why is it too when the video is at 100%)Is there a particular reason for that? or is it just my poor radeon VE having problems with video playback?;-)
