SVCD not working in DVD Player

I used teh DVD2SVCD program to convert my dvd to SVCD. The length of the DVD was 38 mins, so it fit on one CD. After the successful burn in CDRWIN, I put in the SVCD in my dvd player and it says video-cd on the display. As soon as I hit play, the movie just loops the same 1 second beginning of the movie. What did I do wrong, BTW the test video played on my PC looks vertically squished, is this normal for a 4x3 source material?

Does your DVD player support SVCD? Some older players play VCD's but not SVCDs....

As far as squished, what was the resolution setting you used in DVD2SVCD? Did you accidentaly put it in 16:9 resolution when the source was 4:3? That would result in squished looking video...

Check www.vcdhelp.com to see if your player is capable of playing SVCD's. Most players are not able to play them, especially older ones.

You have left us very little information to go on. To be able to help we need more.

Have you tried playing the SVCD on your computer using WinDVD or PowerDVD 4.0?

Yes, the Panasonic DMR-E20 does support SVCD and it plays fine in Windvd and PowerDVD XP. As far as the squished look, I selected the 4x3 option in aspect ratio as this is what the movie is originally in. The final picture size looks taller than it should. When I hit play, the movie plays for a second or two and then starts over again at the beginning. Any help would be appreciated. I will read the FAQ again.

Post you DVD2SVCD_log.txt file for starters.

What did you use to burn the cd and how did you do it?

Are you sure the video is 4:3? Just becuase DVD2SVCD says so doesn't make it so. Play the original VOB files in DVD2AVI and check what that says the aspect ratio is.
You load them in and press f5 to get a preview of the movie. An information screen should show up on the right hand side and tell you what the aspect ratio is.

Have you actually played SVCD discs in this player? If so have you played home made ones or only purchased ones? Panasonic has spotty support for SVCD discs, even if they say they work, they don't all the time. It's the same with Sony.

Here is the log file, I used CDRWIN 3.8D and loaded the cuesheet and clicked the start recording button. Pretty simple!

Use cut and paste not attach for the log file.

So far it really feels like it's the players fault, but without seeing the log file I have nothing more to go on.

Do you have access, maybe at a friends house, to another DVD player that supports SVCD's? This is one way to truly elimate the DVD player as the cause.

I don't see anything really wrong in the log.

For future reference you can uncheck audio downsaple and save yourself some time encoding the audio. It's only really needed for SVCD specific players.

Try unchecking title picture and do it again.
You could try using crash recovery from the muxing and cutting position, but it might still put the picture in. I have never had to edit the d2s file for that so I am unsure what to remove or change.

As an alternative, although I don't normally recomend this, burn the bbMPEG_Muxed_File.mpg file with Nero 5.5.7.2 using the SVCD template. You won't have chapters, but it is just another thing to try.

Definately try to play the disc on another player. If you have to bring it to a store and test it on one of their units. Almost all Apex and Pioneer units are known to work fine.

You might also try using DAEMON Tools to create a virtual CD of the bin/cue file and then use the CD to CD copy function of your CDR software.
