Longest movie on DVD-r?

Hi

Just got an A03 and I am messing aroung with ripping. Assuming all I want is the main movie, no subs and english audio, typically, what is the longest film I can get on a disk. Assume I don't want to mess with re-encoding at a lower data rate etc.

Should be able to fit 120 minutes depending on how the video was originaly encoded.

If you follow the CCE / IFOedit thread - You can fit a 3+ hour film on a DVD-R without a great loss in quality.. I did DAS BOOT directors cut and it was fine to watch...including AC3 sound

how do you do this?
..all ive been doing so far is the was specified in the guides section of the website..
..how do i fit a movie onto a dvd that is a little larger than 4.7G ??
..can someone please post the steps for re-encoding the movie??

You should check the following thread started by Joseph2 http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=17400.

If you read it carefully you should be able to get the perfect reencode.

Without compression I can usually fit about 1 hour 45 minutes or so of a widescreen movie on a blank dvd-r. However a couple of 95 minute movies came out to 5gb that were digitally enhanced or whatever, and Toxic Avenger which was about 90 minutes only came out to 2.3gb or so and it was full screen. So depends on the quality of the video stream I guess. In all these cases I had stripped out everything but the main audio and video stream.

yeah i noticed that too, i think whether its mpeg1 or mpeg2 encoded is the clincher.. ..sneakers is 5.81G and its only a 95min (around that) flick.

The movie I that prompted my question was Alien. Comes in at 112 minutes. I guess this is just too big. What do you think?

Again it depends. Check amazon.com for dvd details. It will tell you whether a dvd is dual layered or not. If not, then it will fit without any stripping. If it IS dual layered, the movie itself still may fit on a blank dvd-r with extras and menu take out. If it still too big, then stripping unneeded audio and sub streams can help. If its STILL to big, then u may need to encode or put on 2 dvd's, or cut credits. Also, just because amazon.com may say the dvd is dual layered doesnt mean that is the same dvd you are ripping, meaning a different company published it. With Alien, its dual layered on the amazon.com details but it has 4 audio streams, subs, commentary, the original soundtrack, trailers, alternate music and production soundtrack, deleted scenes, artwork and outtakes! So by using just the one audio stream and one video stream you would PROBABLY be left with a movie under 4.3gb. Good luck :D

ahh that reminds me.. ..can anyone recommend a good proggie to cut credits out of vobs.. ..i tried one a little while ago and kept crashing my damn computer..
..after cutting the credits do i need to update the IFO in any way or can it leave it as is.
