If you're like me, you usually rip DVDs to DVD-Rs without the menus and bonus clips. I create DVD-Rs that immediately play the movie when you insert it in the DVD player.

Anyway, I found an easy way to add those cool Dolby Digital or DTS trailers to your newly created movie. First you can either grab the trailers off of a DVD that has one, or download them off of the web in VOB format if you can find them.

Next, use a ripping program to grab just the movie files off of the DVD.

Then use DVD Wise to create a few files. Add a VMG Menu and set it to play a brief video. Use the trailer VOB here. Set the VMG Menu to play the first title set. Then add a title to the first title set and use one VOB from the actual movie. We're using just one vob because it will build much faster than with all of them. Don't use DVD Wise to add all the VOBs because it can't always find the right audio stream you ripped. Choose build DVD files. This should create a VIDEO_TS folder under your C: drive (or whatever drive you chose).

Next, go into the newly created VIDEO_TS folder and delete the VTS_01_0.ifo, .bup, and VTS_01_1.VOB files. This should leave VIDEO_TS.BUP, VIDEO_TS.IFO, and VIDEO_TS.VOB files. The .VOB file is of course the trailer, and you can use these three files as a template in conjunction with any movie you rip. Just use ifoedit to create your new VTS_01_0.ifo and .bup, and your VTS_01 VOB files and combine them with your new template files.

Your folder will look something like this when you're done:

Directory of C:\DVD\Willow\VIDEO_TS

03/02/2002 12:08 AM <DIR> .
03/02/2002 12:08 AM <DIR> ..
03/02/2002 12:06 AM 12,288 VIDEO_TS.BUP
03/02/2002 12:06 AM 12,288 VIDEO_TS.IFO
02/26/2002 09:41 PM 28,788,736 VIDEO_TS.VOB
03/02/2002 12:06 AM 77,824 VTS_01_0.BUP
03/02/2002 12:06 AM 77,824 VTS_01_0.IFO
03/01/2002 11:55 PM 1,073,739,776 VTS_01_1.VOB
03/01/2002 11:57 PM 1,073,739,776 VTS_01_2.VOB
03/01/2002 11:59 PM 1,073,739,776 VTS_01_3.VOB
03/02/2002 12:01 AM 1,073,739,776 VTS_01_4.VOB
03/02/2002 12:02 AM 811,759,616 VTS_01_5.VOB

Note: The last seven files were created with Ifoedit. Don't use DVD Wise's version of those files! It won't point to the correct audio stream.

Now when you insert the DVD it will play the trailer, then go on to the actual movie stream.

This works very well. However, even though the trailers are 5.1 DD or DTS, when played using this procedure they are only 2 channel. How do I edit the VIDEO_TS.IFO file so that the trailers will play in 5.1?

Actually, I never had that problem when I used this procedure. Every time they were in Dolby Digital 5.1. However, I never used DTS. I think DVD Wise doesn't support DTS.

To be honest, I now use a different method. I take the .vob of the trailers, remove the pure audio track and the video track using BBDMUX.exe, and use them in Maestro.

In Maestro I create two movie files, one with the trailer, the other with the main movie. Maestro makes it real easy to setup the trailer to play first when inserted, then go to the main menu so you can choose which main movie you want to watch.

This seems to work better, much easier, and more flexible. Maestro even supports DTS audio.

So if you can get your hands on Maestro, that will solve all your problems. Don't ask for it from me, sorry. :)

If I think of what could be your problem using DVD Wise, then I'll let you know.

Good luck!

Well I figured it out.

1) Use Ifoedit and open the VIDEO_TS.IFO file.

2) In the top box hightlight VMGM_MAT

3) In the bottom box scroll down to address 00000104 (which is VMGM audio attributes)

4) Double click on that line and change the table to the appropriate settings for DTS or DD.

5) Save the file.

Did that change the way your DVD player interpreted the audio?

Yes.

before the change. There was no audio with the DTS trailer. now I have 5.1. It is interesting to note that the trailers, THX and Dolby Digital had only two channels engaged (not six) according to the VIDEO_TS.IFO file. Do you see that on your files?

I could have sworn my said that too, but they played back in 5.1.

It's been a while though. That original post was done in March. :)
