I'm ripping "Cannibal: The Musical" into DivX. It's a R1 NTSC DVD, with interlaced 29.97fps video. At first I assumed it was telecined, so I used GreedyHMA to do a IVTC on it - didn't work. Then I decided to deinterlace instead. I tried using Donald Graft's Smart filter, but that just took forever on my P3-900. So then I decided to go with the simplest solution - deinterlace in Flask (treshhold:15, blend) and dual-pass encode.
I set the average bitrate to 830 kbps (it's a 96 minute movie going on a 700Mb CD with 176kbps soundtrack), set the resolution to a low 464x352 (1.33:1) to make up for the extra 6 frames per second. I've done dozens of rips just like this in the past, although almost always with 24fps film source, and they always turned out great. This time, however, the end result looked awful. Encoding artifacts were all over the place, even in still scenes with very little motion.
Has anyone tried ripping this movie? Can someone give me some tips for this specific title?
