Best settings for encoding Seven Samurai?

Hi all,

I know several of you have encoded 7 Samurai, and as we all know, the source is far from perfect. Lots of noise and lighting flicker.

Before I spend a lot of time trying various filters, I thought I'd ask what you have used to encode this movie and if you are happy with your results.

Any opinions are welcome.

I encoded seven samurai as well. Its a long movie, and the source is noisy so, I think you should do at least a 3 CD rip, possibly 4 Cd. Hell why not????

Go for 2 CDs, Audio is mono, so 64kbps will be sufficient. Take a resolution like 320x240 or something like that. Do 2-pass encoding. Use TemporalSmoother(5). If that doesn't clean the video, use also SmartSmoother(3/30). (I'm talking about Virtual Dub filters).

to be honest, I can't remember what rate I encoded at (and it was constant, not variable). But I will say this, like the other person said, go mono audio, since the film is mono...

The one problem is that it is a black and white film, and it tends to be pretty dark, so you will need a higher bit-rate...

Just go for 2000kbits +, that is what I do, maybe dip down to 1800....

but really, you can save on the audio. Do mono DivX audio...
