View Full Version : Question about Audio Sync Probs

I've encoded 2 movies so far that the audio is way out of sync: "10 Things I hate about You" and "The Usual Suspects". I know Usual Suspects has been discussed elsewhere on this board. My question is this, I have tried changing settings and re-running to correct, but I have not been successful. Is there any tool out there that allows me to see the audio track and the video track together and manually adjust their sync? Does this make sense? Can this be done in Adobe Premier for example? Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks.

Try using internal ripping routines. This will usually solve those problems.
You can find lots of threads on this subject by doing a search.

Thanks for the reply, actually I did use the internal routines to rip the movies. I wonder if this only affects a small percentage of movies (those with a logo before the actual audio starts) and if it would make sense to start a list of movies like this with DVD2SVCD settings to resolve the audio sync problems?
I will try to load Adobe Premier at some point to see if I can "visually" adjust the audio track to the video. This seems like it would be a lot easier, if it is even possible to do.

You can use the audio delay settings in the bbmpeg tab to adjust for audio sync problems. If the sound is 5 seconds ahead of the video, put 5180 in the audio delay. Then start crash recovery from muxing and cutting.
What version of DVD2SVCD are you using? There was an issue with audio sync problems with 1.0.6 B1 under certain conditions, but I can recall what caused it to happen. In any case, you should be using the latest version.
Are you playing the SVCD using a software player or a standalone DVD player? There have been issues with both.

-Thanks, I guess I have problems with converting seconds to the audio delay in the bbmpeg tab....5 seconds = 5180?

I was using the version just prior to the latest release. I've done about 20 movies, and it is only an issue with those that start with a logo where the video actually starts before the audio. I know this is a movie specific issue, not a problem with DVD2SVCD.

I am playing on my standalone APEX AD-1500. Again, I'm sure the issue is specific to the movies I mentioned (Usual Suspects and 10 Things I hate About You).
Thanks for your reply. I did a manual resync using TMPGenc and Goldwave per a guide on VCDHELP.com. I know I could have done the same thing with DVD2SVCD, I just am not sure what the BBMPEG tab settings are and what seconds equate to. All of this is my fault for not reading more, so please don't think I'm complaining or saying there's a problem with DVD2SVCD. I'll just have to read up some more for the next movie like this that I encounter.
Thanks all for the help!

"-Thanks, I guess I have problems with converting seconds to the audio delay in the bbmpeg tab....5 seconds = 5180? "
The delays on the bbmpeg tab are in milliseconds so 5 seconds = 5000 milliseconds. The default delays are set at 180 milliseconds. This is to avoid A/V sync problems on certain DVD players but since all the delays are identical, audio and video are matched. To add a 5 second delay to the audio you need to add 5000 milliseconds to the original 180 milliseconds which makes a total of 5180 milliseconds.
I have done the Region 1 "10 Things I Hate About You" and had no problems with sync. Just curious, is the one you are doing a different Region?
I have had similar problems in the past, but only when I did not use the internal ripping routines. Usually they were caused by an FBI warning or film ratings screen which the internal routines get rid of.
I am unaware of any issues with the APEX AD-1500, from what I've read in the forum, they're pretty nice players.
Good Luck,
Mark

So you got your rip of the Usual Suspects to work correctly after cutting? I was able to sync mine, but after cutting with TMPG, I'm missing some audio (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=18955). If yours is working flawlessly, please let me know exactly how you did it, because I'm not getting any help from my other post. Thanks!

Well, I got it working "enough".....the second disc is missing the first 8.5 seconds of audio....exactly the same amount of silence I inserted to sync up the audio/video. I was okay with this. I wouldn't say this was the best fix, but it's good enough for me for this movie. There are several tutorials on www.vcdhelp.com on how to manually sync the audio and video, try looking there.
Good Luck.

marks430-
Thanks for explaining the bbmpeg tab....now it makes more sense.
The "10 Things" DVD I used was also Region 1.
I haven't had ANY issues with the Apex AD-1500. They are SO worth the measly $80.- (My $450 Sony DVD player is unplugged in the basement collecting dust!).
I'm POSITIVE it is movies with certain logos or pre-screens like you mentioned. I've always used the internal routines, but I know I'm not the only one who has seen this. Since it affects so very few movies, I'm not too worried for now....
Thanks for the response.
