What's the best you've ever gotten from CCE and how well does it compare with Hollywood DVDs?
I've been playing with CCE and here's what I've been working with:
NTSC DV, 720x480 interlaced
AviSynth with VD_DNR(12), that's VirtualDub Dynamic Noise Reduction, and TemporalSmoothing(3,3)
CCE encoding at 8000kbit/s, GOP 3/5 closed, image quality 5
When the result of this is played on the DVD set, I can't seem to freeze/pause a frame and not see compression artifacts. I pause Hollywood DVDs all the time to check out how good it looks, and I seldom see compression artifacts.
Granted, Hollywood DVDs are usually 24 fps progressive with pulldown, so the resolution on a paused frame is always going to be better than with my 30 fps interlaced paused frames.
What would happen if I changed the GOP ratios to have more I-frames? What would happen if I changed the image quality to a higher number?
