DVD Drive Speed Problem

I use to use WindowsME to rip DVD's (SmartRipper). I got a drive speed of about 4.5+ It used to take on average 25 minutes to do a full backup of a DVD.

I have since switched to Windows 2000. And now my drive speed will not go above 1.2. Nothing else has changed all hardware is the same, only my operating system has changed. I have tried changing various options in SmartRipper but to no avil.

Why is the drive speed so low? And how can I fix this? As it now take 1.5 hours!! to backup a DVD.

PLEASE HELP as it's driving me nuts!!!

ok.. I read some of the other posts... my transfer mode is on ultra DMA which seems to be the fastest. But my drive speed still will not go above 1.2.

I have tried uninstalling then re-installing no effect. Should I go back to WindowsME? Althought after spending the money on Windows 2000 I hate to do this....

I sooo lost.. sooo stuck... sooooo fed up....

Is there something in my bios I should be looking for? I went throught it all and saw nothing about p10/DMA or anything like that only lba and stuff for my HD.

This wont help you with W2k, but I can tell you that WinME produces RIP speeds 4-5 Xs faster than Win98 or W2k.

I created a small partion for WINME and the other partition for W2k. One of my drives is NTFS (not accessible by WinME) so I can make images >4GB.

I boot to Win ME only when I want to RIP a DVD, otherwise I stick with W2k.

I have 2 drives one with 2000 on it (main one) the other D: with ME on it...

I can use my bios to boot from D: instead of C: but then c: is no longer available... Is there software I can use that will on startup say something like "to boot from a different drive press xxx key"?? and when I press the key combo it will boot from say d: but all drives are still available and visable?

I do not wish to appear dumb but kinda new to this stuff

another thought... I know that if you have 2 OS on the same drive a menu came up asking you wich one to load....

I do have an other OS but it is on the other drive as I said.. So maybe somehow this is the way to go instead of software???

Mine is setup such that the choice to boot to winme or win2k comes up just after the POST. I installed Win2k ont top of winME and chose the option the install 2 OS's at once. You can check into partition magic. I've used this in the past and I seem to remember that it allows you to designate which drive or partition to make active.

I also got a speed problem i am using xp and i rip with a speed +-2.
i tried some tools to check the speed like dvdspeed and some result ... I don't get it...

Hi,

Windows 2000 does not have any ASPI layers installed.
Try downloading force ASPI and installing. This should solve your problems.

This is also the same for Win XP

I have this same problem.a rip speed of 1.2-1.6 in winxp,but it wasn't always that way,when i first installed xp i was getting up to 4.6x on my pioneer DVD114 drive.I have aspi layer installed correctly so i don't think this is the problem.

If you want to dual boot win2k and winME use a boot manager.the one that comes with partition magic is good.there are also free ones out
there.

I believe its definatly a DMA(direct memory access)problem.i run xp but i presume the method for win2k is the same or similar.xp puts the settings for dma under "IDE controllers" instead of "Disk Drives".
my drive went from an average of about 5X to 1.3X,it didn't start that way as in your case.I found that xp had disabled Ultra DMA mode for some reason.this is a quote from microsoft knowledge base.

"For repeated DMA errors.
Windows XP will turn off DMA mode for a device after encountering certain errors during data transfer operations. If more than six DMA transfer timeouts occur, Windows will turn off DMA and use only PIO mode on that device.
In this case, the user cannot turn on DMA for this device. The only option for the user who wants to enable DMA mode is to uninstall and reinstall the device.
Windows XP downgrades the Ultra DMA transfer mode after receiving more than six CRC errors. Whenever possible, the operating system will step down one UDMA mode at a time (from UDMA mode 4 to UDMA mode 3, and so on).
If the mini-IDE driver for the device does not support stepping down transfer modes, or if the device is running UDMA mode 0, Windows XP will step down to PIO mode after encountering six or more CRC errors. In this case, a system reboot should restore the original DMA mode settings.
All CRC and timeout errors are logged in the system event log. These types of errors could be caused by improper mounting or improper cabling (for example, 40-pin instead of 80-pin cable). Or such errors could indicate imminent hardware failure, for example, in a hard drive or chipset."

the solution is to uninstall whichever IDE channel your drive is on and re-start.windows will auto install it on start.after that just make sure DMA is set.thats it.

hope this cures it,theres nothing worse than a slow rip
