What happened? IIRC previously one page of a big forum thread contained 20 messages, now 1 page = 1000 messages. Is it intentional?

Yes, it's intentional. It actually reduces the load on the sql-server because of the way Vbulletin handles 'pagination'. (And made it possible to reinstall the 'Show Printable Version')
There is a setting in you User CP, under Edit Options, where you can set your prefered default. Feel free to use any setting, the default of 1000 is mainly for all non logged in *bots*.
