Smartripper vs dvd decryptor/ Lightning, please respond....

Along with LIGHTNING UK!'s response, I'd like to hear from all. I didn't know if this should be here or general discussion, but here it is anyway.....

I like both programs, Lightning, and I understand your favoritism to your own program, but what is the difference between decryptor and smartripper? I have used both and they both seem to work well, yours is a little faster in most cases for me. But is there any real difference? Just functionality and extra settings? If I knew how to get ahold of Tron I'd as the same question of him....

I guess I'm not into hardcore ripping, and as long as the goodies get on the hd it's all good. Just a question, that's all.......

I like smartripper better. I like stream processing and all of the goods. SmartRipper seems to have more features and more configuration options, I may be wrong though, I've only tried dvd decrypter for a minute or so, and it wasn't bad, I just like smartripper for some reason :)

Movie mode in SmartRipper is where its core functionality comes into play. As you all know, DVD Decrypter doesnt perform IFO parsing but still, pretty much every feature available in SmartRippers Movie mode has been implemented into it. Everyone has always moaned about SmartRippers stability...I dont see people complaining about mine, and having looked at trons authentication code, I know why even Doom9 himself still uses DVD Decrypter for Authentication over all the other ways of doing it. DVD Decrypter has excellent error reporting, smartripper will just say something like 'error at lba xxxxx: unlock and try again.' - Fat lot of good that is!
When people have a problem ripping a dvd, I always get them to try my ripper - mainly because none of the other ripper tell you what went wrong and so it is impossible to try and fix the error.

Stream Processing is also available in DVD Decrypter so you cant really use that as an excuse for using it!

I can see how you might have come to this conclusion, but you must take into account how SmartRipper does it decoding. There are lots of options related to VobDec and DeCSSPlus code. Mine doesnt use and of that 'Key Finding' crap any more so there is no reason to have the 'check for key per vob set, per file' and 'search intensity' crap etc.
Because of the 100% ASPI nature of DVD Decrypter I am able to have much more control over what happens and how I do/handle things - The ReadFile API routines are a little less easy to work with.

DVD Decrypter has other unique feature like the 'Log', 'Read ISO Mode', and 'Write ISO Mode'.

What you choose to rip with is up to you, I put mine forward because a) its mine and b) I believe that it is actually better put together than smartripper c) its easier to help people when they get stuck - because I know exactly how it works!
