I have been watching home-burned Blu Ray disc, followed this guide to play Dolby Atmos through my Sansung soundbar https://www.samsung.com/uk/support/tv-audio-video/how-to-use-dolby-atmos-with-your-samsung-soundbar/

Set options to pass Bitstream rather than PCM.

Frequent sound dropouts in the movie. I assumed it was my authoring of the disc but on resetting the audio options to PCM, the dropouts stopped.

I am assuming processing capacity of my Panasonic player can't handle the stream fast enough?

There is no processing on the player side when using bitstream.
An extensive listing of your equipment might be useful.

Thanks

Blu Ray player - Panasonic DMR-PWT550
TV - Samsung QE55S95B
Sound Bar - Samsung HWQ600B
connected using HDMI e-arc cable

The BDR was burned on my computer using ConvertXtoHD and contained three different versions of a Japanese anime. I cross checked the dropouts on all three versions in case it was a duff burn - all the same result.

The only thing I can think of is a bad HDMI cable.
Amazon Basic cables seem to be the most reliable out there for a good price.
According to Dolby (https://www.dolby.com/experience/home-entertainment/articles/connecting-your-dolby-atmos-enabled-soundbar-to-your-tv/#connectyoursetup), a 2.1 cable is necessary to guarantee eARC functionality (also called Ultra High Speed).
A normal 2.0 cable might not be sufficient, depending on the manufacturing quality.
PCM does not require eARC, thus works even with 1.4 cables.

It is a heavy duty 'quality' braided cable, heavy metal plugs etc. BUT it could be an old (1.4) version standard as it was bought way back with an erlier player.

I'll try a new high-spec one.
Thanks

ThanksAny 'Ultra Certified' HDMI lead (with QR code and hologram on its packaging) will offer stable results ;)

Until you get the new cable, you could try lowering the output resolution on your BD player to 1080p, and let the TV do the 4K upscaling instead. This will free up a lot of bandwidth for the audio, so that it could work with a 1.4 cable. At least in theory :D
