Is there a way to back up Divx files as VCD to DVDR

Is there a way to do that and stil play like a VCD or SVCD ? What combination of resoultions are needed ? Ideas ? Thanks

Hi,

I believe you are asking if a standalone DVD player will play a vcd that is encoded on a dvd-r?

I've never tried it, but I assume that the type of disc doesn't matter, it's the content that determines how a player plays something back.....maybe someone here knows for sure?

As for settings, there are "standard" settings that should be followed (and in some cases, must be followed) in order for your player to recognize vcd or svcd.

The standard settings for vcd NTSC are 29.97 fps, 352x240 resolution, 1150 kp/s / PAL 25 fps, 480x480 (I think) and same bitrate. Standard audio bitrate is 224 kps.

Standard settins for SVCD....NTSC is 480x480, PAL 480x576. Both can use VBR up to 2.6 Mb/s (or 2600 kb/s). SVCD supports Widescreen and uses mp2 for audio. SVCD's are very customisable, including the ability to add menus, chapters, subtitles (switchable) and other features. These features are also supported by VCD 2.0, but not to the level of SVCD.

VCD uses MPEG-1 video compression, which is more efficient (smaller file sizes) than SVCD, but suffers from video quality due to the bitrate limitation.

SVCD's use MPEG-2 video, which is the same format for DVD, so the quality is much higher (but uses more space).

Some standalone players offer support to so-called XVCD/XSVCD (or Extended VCD or SVCD). This means that higher bitrate limitations exist (i.e. you could encode a VCD at 1300 kps if you wanted to) and also higher resolutions are supported. Only certain standalones support this.
