Question about XviD GKnot guide ...

hi,

I have read doom9's guide about XviD&GKnot...

but now I have a question about it (and I didnt find any other thread about that ;))

If I have finished the (2pass-) 1st pass, I have to start the 2nd pass, that's ok, I have no problem with that ;)

But why I am doin that 1st pass? Where or when does VD need any file from the 1st pass when it encodies the movie in the 2nd pass?
In the doom9 guide, I didnt find any sentence about a "connection" between 1st pass and 2nd pass!


3. And is it right that now, I have to wait until the 1st pass is finished and then I can start the 2nd pass? So, I cannot start my encoding process at 11 p.m. and when I come home next day the movie is ready, because it is just the 1st pass finished and waits for the 2nd pass? :(
Is that the advantage of GKnot? ;)

in the first pass the codec collects infornation on how copressible your source is and with this information the bitrate can be distributed resulting in overall better quality.

the connection between 1st an 2nd pass is that you specify the .stats file you created in the first pass. you may not have noticed this because the save-dialog is the same as the open-dialog in xvid.

gordian knot isn't neccesary any more because xvid now has an internal second pass mode which does the job of gordian knot scaling the curve. so in every case the first pass needs to be completed before you start the second.

the first pass creates an avi that isn't really important. all that matters is the .stats-file which collects information about the source and how compressible it is.

when you select first pass you see a box that says "1st pass stats file". for 1st pass it functions as a save dialog, meaning that the file will get saved to the destination you entered.

in second pass internal the box is still there and this time it is an open dialog which tells the codec where to find the file it created before. if you just dont change anything in those boxes it all works on its own.

If i understood you correctly, when you configure the second pass, in the XviD codec tab, in the "Main tab", there is the "Encoder control". There you choose the "2 pass- 2 pass internal". Bellow that there is a "2 pass control", where you will find a place that says "1 pass stats". That where you indicate where to look for the stats file made in the 1 pass.

Hope it's this that you wanted to know.
