View Full Version : RCE Protection and Multi-Angle Question(s)...

I've just recently come upon two new things that I have not seen before.

RCE protection??? I used smartripper and did a movie in backup mode. When trying to play it in PowerDVD I got a blue screen with one movie saying that the player could not play the dvd because it was set to the wrong region. Another movie gave me a picture of the world with the different regions saying there was nothing wrong with the DVD, but I had the wrong region player once again. I did a little searching and found a little about RCE Protection, but would like to understand it better. I think what I did was use IFOEdit on all the ifo's and did "region free" on each.

Question: Is this the correct way to work around RCE Protection?

Multi-Angle Films??? I was trying to do shrek 'full screen' and while I can't remember if I did a smartripper 'backup' or 'movie' mode, ended up with with a movie that plays just fine in PowerDVD, but attempts to use DVD2AVI on it resulted in an audio stream that would not work in DVDMaestro (error on import media asset), and when played in an audio player seemed to skip right where the funky multi-language title would be at the beginning. I'm assuming the re-encoded video would do the crazy multi-language thing to.

Question: Is there a straight forward way to handle these? I think I read that we should use smartripper in 'backup' mode and it will then handle the multiangle stuff right? Or use VSTRIP? I just want to make sure I get a good process especially since I won't know prior to ripping if the movie is multiangle. Any help here would be appreciated.

Sorry for the long post, but I think that others are probably struggling with the same issues, and this is such a great place to share information.

I'm not sure if your technique will work on disabling RCE protection. What you are doing sounds like changing the general settings of each IFO to Region 0?

When authoring a DVD it's very easy to program the disk to look up the Region Number of the player it is running on. RCE works (presumably) by jumping to a still menu or looping video if the region setting is not 1. This menu/video will basically display on screen an error message saying "This disk is for US players only".

This is coded into the DVD itself and I'm not sure whether IFOedit will be able to change this. It would take a lot longer, but there's nothing to stop you ripping all the assets and re-authoring the disk without RCE or region protection in DVD Maestro.

Actually, IfoEdit asks you to select a region and 0 is not offered. I choose 1. This allows my SW players to be able to play the material. For all I know if I did nothing, DVD2AVI & CCE would be able to process the material without any problem, but I'm really trying to find out more about RCE.

Just have a look at this:

We've already had this issue before. :)

One quick clarification Derrow:

I think I did the region free button in IfoEdit on individual Ifo's, not the main Video_TS.Ifo. From your link it looks if I just do the 'region free' button when I have the Video_TS.ifo open it will take care of all the different sections? If so, that's a prefect solution to my problem.

Thanks for the reply.

No that's okay. On my site, it was just an example for the main video_ts.ifo.
But the RCE is sometimes located in the other IFO files too!
So indeed, you must open every IFO file, and hit 'Region Free'!
