hi,
that thread is for the future (when DivX5 is out), but u can also say what u think about the "fight" between XviD & DivX5!
Which codec has the chance to be the best?
(we will get closer informations, when DivX5 is out, sure; but it is ur pre-opinion which is intersting for me ;))

I think any new codec releases make everyone happy.

Xvid is under GPL licence. And for me, it is a strong argument to prefer it. And moreover, it is better than divx4. What a wonderful life we have with this !

GPL is the word.
And another plus of XviD is that you can test it at any point of its development. Its pace is dazzling ATM, with new curve-compression algos out by the minute and users' suggestions getting implemented overnight. ;) We couldn't have all that fun with a closed source...

Normaly, two versions of Divx5 will be released :
Divx5 basic : free
Divx5 pro : 20$(more optimized)
But it could be a big hoax, Take care about this rumor :(
Really I appreciate Xvid more and more:)

Didn't Doom9 tell us to stop speculating about DivX5? It's no use anyway, because the codec hasn't been released yet, and everyone is just spreading false rumors.
Just sit tight and wait. Is that so hard?

But I heard there will be be a DivX 5 Enterprise Edition, that can pull 87fps on a PII 450, in RGB no less, and squeeze Ben Hur on one cd at 720x with perfect quality...too bad it's going to cost $1,999.95 (plus shipping and handling, void where prohibited) ;).
All joking aside, Acaila is right. No use in speculation, the codec will be here soon to test. Right now all anyone is doing is guessing and starting flame wars about "my codec is better than your codec," with no proof either way.

Everyone thinks that there is going to be some crazy new magic codec, but we already saw that codec released about 2 years ago. I personally dont think that divx can get a hell of a lot better. I would like it to, and all of the little optimozations are great but, I think divx will only increase a little bit no matter what we do. I would say that divx is the mp3 or jpeg of video. Those standards didnt get imroved upon for years.

Sorry but I'd have to disagree. There won't be a "magical" codec that part is true. But you want to talk about improvement? Do you remember not all that long ago when single pass low-motion rips were the best we could do? Then we graduated to FU which seemed like a miracle. Then we moved on to Nandub/SBC, which was an even bigger miracle, and only took a fraction of the time to create even better rips. All this happened in a pretty short amount of time. The growth and popularity of video editing at the public level will keep things pretty dynamic for a while I'd wager.

Come on guys! Enough is enough on this. The thread needs to stop here.
Doom9 stated he didn't want the speculation and it seems to have spread rapidly then. Stop the rumors and codec bashing until we can do a fair comparison:)

You may be right Foo. I have always only done 1- pass rips though. this being because it just takes too long for 2 pass, maybe once I get a dual processor. I like Divx4 because it gives good enough 1 pass rips for 1 cd. You are right that video encoding is getting more popular. I do still think that the codec has improved slightly over the past 2 years, as it still remains to be mpeg4, and M.P.E.G has created all of the video standards, that is why I dont think that things will get al that much better until mpeg puts out a new format, because each one is revolutionary. I am still optomistic for the future of Divx though

Personally... I want a codec that looks good over areas of the same color...(eg... really dark areas and areas of very uniform color) A little bit more compressability maybe than the present codecs. FPS is not an issue to me... Its the quality of the rips that matter to me

Sorry Matter, but the speculation and possible bashing was quelled long ago (read from Acaila's post on) :D . This thread is basically "yes new codecs are fun" and some reminiscing about the days when Flask was the bee's knees (except for those of us that manually IVTC'd low-motion stuff) ;) . DivX 5 will be fun to play with, but so will MCF and lots of other goodies on the horizon.

that's the best argument against divxnetworks for me! even if the new codec blows all our heads off, i'll still be sticking with xvid, since it's free, and the people behind it just have fun coding it and don't do it for money. it's somehow a matter of personal sympathy.
another point is that divx 5.0 will sure be around for quite a while (as we know from former codecs of divxnetworks) without a bugfix or anything. with xvid we have an update almost every day and new options/optimisations get implemented in a matter of hours. i love it!

I agree and disagree. Its certainly not the right time to do any speculations about how the quality of the 2 compares to each other, as this is of course mere speculation.
But it was confirmed that DivX N will make us pay for the codec, at least for the 'Pro' version. I also heard rumours about prices, and they seem reasonable to me, but i dont like the general development in this matter.
DivX 4 started out as a GPL originally, being OpenDivX. I didnt care much when it got closed source, i was well ware of the fact the dev team ( DARC ) cant work 12 hrs every day for free on such a demanding project, and so i liked the idea them making money with selling the codec for VOD purposes and giving it away to users for free. But now things turn out to be much different and there will be 2 versions :
- a 'free' version with very good decoding capabilities and DSF
- a 'Pro' version with enhanced encoding options, being not free
As stated above, i dont like this development at all !! Whats coming next ? Will there probably be no free version of DivX 6 ? I mean, these guys told us once the DivX codec will stay free for our personal use .... so, they dont break with this as we still do have a 'free' version, but .... f...ck ( forgive me ), i dont want 2nd best version for free and to pay for the good one !! Me and many other people have been investing a lot of time into beta testing, preparing grounds, etc. and now we should pay for the codec ????
I honestly admit i couldnt believe that the 'competing' project of XviD could get that matured with only a handfull skilled developers working on it part time .... but the results seem to be convincing ( its really time me getting back to encoding again and testing this codec ... right now i am only administrating encoding related subjects ;).
So i am more and more tending to see things as Teegedeck does and always did .... he always believed in this project ( XviD ) as it is OpenSource, so its in the hands and belongs to the community ... just like Vorbis, Ogg and MCF !!! Time for me chaing my mind completely it seems ....
Here, Here! :)
Very recently it has annoyed me more what DivX did with OpenDivX (looking through the source as I have been doing, you see little notes & patches contributed by people that weren't part of DivXNetworks....it does feel like they ripped 'em off a bit)....I really have gone off DivXNetworks recently (especially now Betaboy's gone)...(they never answer email's either unless they need you....as I think BlackSun would agree with)
The good thing about GPL, is once something is GPL, it can never go back (OpenDivX was under its own license not GPL). Hence, XviD, will be free forever... :)
the dev team ( DARC ) cant work 12 hrs every day for free on such a demanding project
Why not? :D What was Coca-Cola, Coffee & biscuits invented for huh? :)
Cheers,
-Nic
ps
Anyway that was my little rant for the day :)

I don't like having too much warez software...espeically now im working (anything goes when your a student :) )....But if they think im going to pay for the pro version...............

yes, thank you Nic. It all started out free and DivxNetworks is already trying to make a buck off of it at ebay. We started it and now they are taking something that we h$cked from M$ and are trying to sell it to us, well we are not the lamos that go to Wal Mart and buy that crap, we are the ones that made it free in the first place, so even if they do charge, look at the general user, very advanced users, we all share. I am all for Xvid, forget Divxnetworks, I saw a thread from one of their moderators that sid that they were delaying the release of Divx5 to hype it up some( which is probably a load, they just arent finished) but they admitted to just wanting to hype their product. SO WHAT DOES THE 5 AFTER DIVX MEAN!!!??? 5=HYPE, nothing else

So can we PLEASE stop this thread now?
It's not correlated with XviD, it's just DXN bashing/hype, it's blah.
STOP IT.
No such stuff here please. Do it over at DXN! :)
Your right, sorry, got carried away.
You should probably lock it or delete it Koepi.
