Greetings,

I would like to know which settings to use to retain as close to the original quality of the source 3D Bluray as possible when converting with BD3D2MK3D.

I converted a film using the default settings, but full rather than half side by side, and the file size was still only 1/7 the original file size, so I expect this means it is lossy. I would like the result to be as close to lossless as possible.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks

You should always use the CRF mode. To retain the best quality, use a low CRF value. 0 is lossless, but the file size will be huge, even more than the original file size of the two M2TS files of the BD.

Note also that the original file size is systematically too high. It's certainly for commercial reasons. A BD can hold huge files and therefore the buyer expects a file around 45 GB, but it's totally unnecessary. IMO, a 10GB movie correctly encoded with a good encoder like X264 cannot be distinguished from the original. Trust your eyes, and not the file size.

If I am to trust my eyes, the default settings appear blurry to me, and a full side by side conversion from 42gb to 7gb would seem to have to be lossy but I don't know.

I settled at a CRF of about 14, which resulted in a more similar converted file size which is hopefully more faithful.

Thanks

The default crf for x264 in BD3D2MK3D (also in MeGUI) is 23, the help of x264.exe show the default to 28.
I use crf 20 most the times, and sometimes to 18 for high quality.
Some exigent people go until 16 but less than this is considered like useless.
