This seems like a question that was probably answered a million times here, but slap me silly & call me susan if I can find it on these boards...
Will any mpeg-4 codec play divx4 movies, or does it have to be specifically the divx 4.xx codec?
Here's my problem in more detail if you can spare the time: I'm looking at the latest portables out there that say they can play back MPEG-4 video (particularly the Archos jukebox multimedia.) I've just encoded all my movies in Divx4, which I understand is a MPEG-4 compliant codec. Well now Archos has been saying they won't support divx because of licensing issues, but still advertises it's product will playback MPEG-4 video. So are they saying they have somehow disabled playback of Divx4 movies, while still allowing other mpeg4 codec movies to play? Or are they just saying they are not allowed to advertise divx compatability anymore, but since they support mpeg4, they innately support divx as well?
All help appreciated, and if you have time, please berate me for this noob question... :D
