View Full Version : Challenge: removing noise while raining

I am approaching the encoding of Monster anime.
There are sequences with dark background and starved encoding, resulting in noise and quantization flukes. The bad part is that, in those parts, there is rain too, that is really hard to keep when denoising.
I need your help and hints to do a proper job.
Here (https://www.mediafire.com/file/psbvnuc4iwgx2dt/Monster+22569-23172.mkv/file)is a small clip from the german BD.
Thank you in advance. :p
P.S: no mlrt and similar, my PC is too old to afford that

fft3dfilter+cas

Too generic. :)
Show me a proper script and result. :p
P.S: Why not DFTTest?

You asked for a hints.
FFT3DFilter+CAS and maybe DeHalo_Alpha should should work fine.
P.S: Why not DFTTest?
Simply because FFT3DFilter was the first that came to mind.

I proposed it as a challenge ;)
Do you think that something like ManyPlus (http://avisynth.nl/index.php/ManyPlus) and FFTSpectrum (http://avisynth.nl/index.php/FFTSpectrum) could help me to find the proper frequencies to remove?

I doubt it.
Here's your script, in case you haven't managed to write it till now:
LWLibavVideoSource("Monster 22569-23172.mkv",cache=false,format="YUV420P8", prefer_hw=0,repeat=true)
FFT3DFilter(interlaced=false)
CAS()

No parameters at all? That's a joke, be sincere ;)

you can tune the settings, maybe even call fft3dfilter twice, to your liking, but the defaults seem fine,...

The output is too blurred, even trying to tweak.
CAS can help but it can't do miracles.

You can also use some luma sharpening after/before applying fft3dfilter.
(https://imgsli.com/MzEzNDc0 used Vapoursynth https://pastebin.com/bDMCU2Va, but all the filters I used are available for Avisynth too)

Thanks for your script.
There is a lot of quantization noise and halo left and that ruins the general look. Perhaps encoding with nvenc doesn't help to see those issues.

Have you tried KNLMeansCL? Adding some static noise could help with the dark background.
EDIT
The combo from here is also nice https://github.com/Jaded-Encoding-Thaumaturgy/vs-denoise
With decent speed if you have a cuda gpu. Params need some tuning.

Yes, I tried but the quantization fluctuation is really a PITA.

Tried VS many times but I really can't stand it.
