I thought that it was a dead format but The boy and the heron has been released as AVC+MGVC again in Japan.
Anyone has noticed any way to deal with it in software?

If you manage to write a parser/demultiplexer/decoder from scratch for the few japanese 12-bit encodes assumedly generated in-house by Panasonic, for free, without having access to the specs...
and then expect to be asked how to reencode/remux that, again without having access to the specs, and for free...
Hard to imagine, anyway.

I have managed to get hold of a blu-ray disc containing MGVC finally.
Scan is running through using the disc, but fails/stops after around 1.7GB if I rip the disc to ISO and try to scan the ISO image. Not sure what is causing that behaviour.
Looking at the .bin files, they contain a lot of unparsed garbage data (possibly the MGVC stream), along with streams that can be played by normal players.
But unfortunately, as there are no MGVC specs available at all, and discs using this are very rare, this issue will get the lowest possible priority for me.
I don't think there will be a fix anytime soon, unless someone is willing to submit a patch.

There is no problem about ripping, with proper software, i.e. I already have the MGVC folder on my disk.
The question is how to understand MGVC format and "add" to AVC stream to have the 12bit video.

Why would anybody want to encode AVC at 12-bits?

Working, not encoding. HEVC is 10 bit native and it's easier/faster to deband from 12 to 10 than from 8 to 10.

Yeah, I saw that too! It’s interesting they’re still using AVC+MGVC. As for software, I’d recommend checking out HandBrake or FFmpeg. They usually handle a variety of formats pretty well. You might need to tweak some settings, though, especially for the audio and subtitle tracks.

I'm not aware of any open source MGVC support.

Given that now decryption tools (https://git.gammaspectra.live/WeebDataHoarder/pana-mgvc) seem to be available, how to process the streams in AVS, once I get the decrypted files?
