Slow Encoding Speed?

Used Smartripper to grab the IFO and VOB's to HDD. Plugged IFO into DVD2SVCD and hit "GO". CCE 2.5 encoding takes roughly 22 hours to Encode 88 minutes worth of DVD? All my settings in DVD2SVCD are default except for the rip. Is this normal or slow? (Running a 1.2GHz Processor with plenty of ram and disk space)

Earlier test performed on home computer. Another test on my work computer seemed way to slow also. Test as follows:

Trailer: ?Wrinkle in Time? ripped from Spy Kids DVD (Using Smartripper)
Running Time: 117 Seconds (Approx. 2 Minutes)
Format: NTSC
Aspect Ratio: 4:3
VOB Size: Approx. 95.0 MB

Plugged IFO file into DVD2SVCD and hit ?GO?

VAF File:
Speed = 0.370 Max.
Time = 5 Minutes

M2V File:
Speed = 0.385 Max.
Time = 23 Minutes

The CCE process took approx. 28 Minutes for a 2 minute trailer. This seems pretty slow. At this rate a 2 Hr. movie would take 25+ Hours.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. The only thing that seemed suspect in the log file was the comment ?Hybrid Film activated. IVTC will beformed and will slow down the entire process!? I noticed that force film is set to Automatic (Default setting).

Here are my (Work) Computer specs:
Motherboard: ABIT VH6-II
CPU: Intel Pentium III (1.0 GHz)
Ram: 256

You are doing a 4pass VBR. With VAF together, you will go 5 times through your movie. It lasts 27 min, about 1620sec. Your movie is 117 sec. This means a CCE RT of ~0.36. It is an 4:3 fullscreen, NTSC, you use IVTC. Your speed is ok.
If you convert a widescreen without need of IVTC you will get much better speeds, with you machine about 0.7 to 0.9.
If you use 3 pass instead of 4pass (I think with enough bitrate 3pass is enough) you will save some more time.

This will drop your speed about 40% or more. There is no way around it. The quality or type of video forces you to use this. Most videos do not need this so as stated above your speed should be greater normally.

If you think doing just your short video is bad I am doing an entire movie right now that needs IVTC. At first I thought there was something wrong with my computer, because I had just done a new install and my speed was so slow. After some time of fighting to tweak my machine I finally decided to read the log, which if I took my own advice I would have down first, and found out why I was so slow.

BTW most people that are getting greater speed then you are using AMD CPU's with DDR. Memory bandwidth is a big deal with CCE. PC133 memory just doesn't have the speed. So your RT with IVTC doesn't look that bad. My old P3 800 with 512mb of PC133 did about .5-.7 depending on the video without IVTC.

Also whenever possible don't use an external ripper. The program has been tested using the internal routines and Vstrip. SmartRipper will work most times, but it has been known to cause issues as well, especially newer versions.

Thank You all very much for the help! I knew a 1.2 GHz Computer could do better!
I will try a different DVD to see what I get without the IVTC slowdown.

I will try to use the internal ripper as suggested; however, I no longer have access to some of the DVD?s. Which brings me to another question that I have... I have a couple of movies on my HDD that I only have the VOB?s for. This is fine for watching the movie on the computer (PowerDVD), but I would like to make SVCD's out of them. Is there a way to do this in DVD2SVCD with only the VOB?s and no IFO File?

Yes you can easy enough.
Next time try the search as this is a common question.
All you need is an IFO file from a video with the same type (PAL/NTSC) and framerate and then just name it the same as the VOB files that you are using or better yet name the VOB files the same as the IFO file. Only potential issue is really the audio. If the audio does not line up right with what is in the IFO. Doesn't happen often, but when CCE starts up play the audio in media player to make sure you have the right language or don't have the director's commentary. If you do start over and select a different audio stream. Most times it will work fine.
