Can I improve on speed of 0.383 ?

I have a PIII 733mhz 512mb
2 Harddrives, 15gb 5400 and 10gb 7400 both linked on the same cable, with the movie ripped to the 15gb and everything else saved to the 10gb
I get a speed of 0.383 when ripping a 1hr 47min movie
no subtitles and 1 audio stream,
PAL,
16:9 ratio,
Audio downsample 48 -> 44.1
Bitrate: Max 2450, Min 300, Max avg. 2230
No Temporal Smoother,
Multipass x3, ticked Safe mode

Anybody got any helpful hints ?

The whole process takes approximately just under 20hrs, the old saying goes "if it works, don't fix it" I just like it to work a bit quicker

1)i take it you use dvd2svcd as a frontend. do you mind enclosing a log file and avisynth script?
2)do you really need "safe mode"?, 'cos it slows you down!
3)no need to downsample audio

MMM, settings seem fine

Anyhow, i get higher speed in CCE, about .5 - .7 with my P3@500 but that is probably because I use CBR and not VBR. But I am satisfied with CBR, doing everything in under 7 hours :D

My Celeron 850@1133MHz/ 384MB SDRAM is doing 0,9+ with 4 pass encoding....!!
Found out that some of the settings in BIOS (Memory Interleave I think) made a huge difference in speed (0,4-5 -> 0,9+) !!!

The right BIOS setting referred to is "In-Order Queue Depth".
Have to be "8", and not "1".
I dont think that all motherboards have this setting, by my "old" BE6-II had.
It gave me a huge gain in "POWER" :D :D

What BIOS version do you have? Award?

I cant reboot yet to see if I can find any settings like that because I am currently encoding

It is AWARD modular BIOS. Dont remember the version, but think it was the one named -72 available from ABIT's FTP site.

I have AWARD as well but i have an Intel CPU.

I tried to look in the settings for In Depth or something that has an entry of 1 but couldnt find any.

My other "old" Slot1 MB dosnt have it either.
My MSI MS-6163 Pro (MS-6163 V2.0) dosn't have a adjustment for this, but it seems to be activated in respect of speed.
My ABIT BE6-II V.2.0 have this setting, and it's recommended value running over 100MHz FSB is 1 (ABIT's recomendation fo max stability).

You might do a search on internet and see if you can find what this really is !?

Another thing that give me some (+ 0,1-0,15 ?) gain in speed was the change from an older WD 13,6 GB 7200rpm/ATA66 HD and WD 8,4 GB 5400rpm/ATA66, to a new RAID 0 mount of two Seagate 20GB 5400rpm/ATA100 (U6) disks.
Don't know if it was the RAID, or just the fact that theese new disks is faster ?
Could'nt notice a speed gain when uppgrading from 256MB to 384 MB SDRAM, but I guess I cant Win everytime :)
