Going through Family Matters frame-by-frame shows that it appears to have been shot on film at 24 fps, then blend-converted to 30 instead of properly telecined. Or at least that's what was done to some episodes.

How can such staggering incompetence exist among alleged professionals?

I used to love Family Matters. Unfortunately, it seems that less-than-stellar work on "professionally-produced" media is common. I've got a project where I'm trying to tone map the LOTR 4K Theatricals down to 8-bit SDR 1080p, using the remastered 1080p Extended Edition as a reference. And would you believe it seems to have a green tint? So, I'm slowly coming to the conclusion it's futile trying to match that exactly.

There is nothing more green than the green tint of the BluRay of TTT extended... :scared:
I really would not use this as a reference, be glad that the 4k versions do not have the tint.

It's a tough battle between two hypothesis:

Scenario 1:
layoffs + poorly coded automation

Scenario 2:
laziness blended with superficiality


Hard to say.

Yes, that'sss the conclusion I've come to. The 4K versions have no green tint, and even when brought down to SDR, there's a warmth and accuracy to the colours. The remastering may not be perfect but this is the best the films have looked. Someday, perhaps, there'll be a proper rebuilding from the negatives, but in a VFX-heavy series as LOTR, it sems doubtful.

That's so annoying! You're just trying to enjoy a show, and then you notice something that totally takes you out of it. I mean, how do professionals mess up something like that? Did you notice a big difference in the episodes that were done differently?
