View Full Version : Smartripper doesn't see the last cell of certain Star Trek DVDs

I'm once again ripping DS9 and Voyager and I've noticed an interesting problem. Smartripper can't see the last cell of the last chapter of the last episode of each disk. I don't think it ever had this problem before. Smartripper is still working fine with other shows, and DVD Decrypter can see the last cell on each DVD.

This computer's hard drive was wiped recently and I have a few different copies of Smartripper from a few different sources, so could this be a Smartripper version issue?

VH page claims that "SmartRipper is a very old DVD Ripper tool" and its latest version (2.41) has more than 20 years...

...so why not MakMKV (https://www.makemkv.com/) (latest version released 2024-01-20) instead ?

The only reason why Smartripper is no longer maintained is because it was so good at what it did that its creator got hit with a Cease and Desist order.

MakeMKV may be good at what it does, but it's not "got hit with a Cease and Desist" good.

The old DVD Decrypter ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD_Decrypter ) actually was "got hit with a Cease and Desist" good.
Did you check it out ?

Yes, I know. But Patch suggested MakeMKV, not DVD Decrypter.

Did you check it out ?

Yes. It's always my second resort after Smartripper fails. In fact, I mentioned it in my OP.

I just want to know why Smartripper has suddenly developed an erroneous behavior that it didn't have the last time I used it to rip Star Trek DS9 and Voyager.

Note,
RipIt4Me adds ability to skip over missing dummy sectors (or whatever they are called), it hands a list of those
sectors to DvdDecrypter and so avoids attempts to defeat DvdDecrypter success. [better than DvdDecrypter alone].

MakeMKV is good too, and forever free for DVD.
