Problem with making SVCD

I burned my first SVCD and tried it in my standalone player (Philips DVD710), but it couldn't read it. The same happend when I tried PowerDVD, I got an error "Not supported format". So my question is what went wrong? I followed the guide of Doom9 closely, but something went wrong.

Movie: The Mexican (PAL, region 2) - DivX was no problem
Burned it with Nero.

Maby I forgot something or do I have to configure DVD2SVD for PAL and region 2 otherwise than described in the guide?

Please give me a hint, cause I'm a newbie and it was my first SVCD.

You know, there can be many things that went wrong so give some more details (burning software used, PowerDVD version, ...)

First I made a DivX. Then I tried to make a SVCD, but not from this DivX file.

Thanks, to remind me. I'm sorry when I annoyed you. The software I used to burn was Nero 5.5.7.2 and PowerDVD 3.0.

I followed the guide very closely, but I can't find anything. Then I ripped 1 chapter of Face/Off and tried again. I bruned the image file on a CDR, but the same results. So I'm stuck, I just can't figure out what went wrong.

Hi Ralf,

that's a first good starting point. With PowerDVD 3.0 - it does not support SVCD playback - you have to use WinDVD 3.x or PowerDVD 4.0 for that.

With the playback in your standalone - hmm - how did you burn the images with Nero? By loading the *.cue files with File|Burn Image... or did you choose only the *.bin files. Try burning the *.cue files and make sure to enable overburning in Nero's File|Preferences...|Expert Features tab as Nero sometimes has problems to correctly finalize the CD-R when this option is not enabled. Also make sure to use "Disc-at-once" mode for the burning process as "Track-at-once" can't be used when overburning.

What about the *.mpg files do the play correct in PowerDVD file mode?

I followed your advise and got PowerDVD 4.0 now. After installing the SVCD worked just fine. I think my standalone player doesn't play SVCD's, so I'll try if it will play VCD's or is it a waste of time when it doesn't work with SVCD's?

thanx for reporting back with at least a little succes. ;)

Have a look at http://www.vcdhelp.com to see if your standalone DVD player supports SVCD playback. See the DVD player compability list and search for your model - then see the comments of some users and their experiences with this player.

Or have a look at this lengthy thread http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12782 in this forum and see if your model is already in it.

And to your question - it is not a waste of time to try if it supports VCDs as you can't tell from it's failure to play SVCDs.
