Interlaced, telecined, anamorphic...We need one guide!

Hi all,

I think I can speak for numerous newbies that keep poping up everyday.
We need one guide that clearly can illustrate what is interlaced, telecined, anamorphic etc. Most of this stuff might belong to advanced topics...maybe. I started ripping-backing up endevour few weeks ago. I'm more of practical person as most of reg.Joes are, and I need a good guide on "how-to get there where you want to be". Too much theory... maybe good to raise your IQ but can be done in spare time :). I've read many posts... Same questions keep poping up over and over again. Most of us have reg.4x3 tv sets, we poor :( DVDs keep being 16x9, some progressive some interlaced.
16x9 films (progressive?) simple to rip and encode keeping the same aspect ratio, but resizing for 4x3TV is quite complicated and no clear instructions exist on what is what and how-to. Interlaced source is totaly different animal and hard to swallow for a newbie. Smart deinterlace doesn't work 100% and most of the time you get jerky video on parts of the movie.

Advanced and expirienced users could you please compile one guide on this subject so we newbies will not polute space here and waste bandwith and your time going over and over again?

This only my opinion and assumption, don't kick my butt to hard :)
But we can make a pol and see how many people agree with me.
Also I was an ESL student in past-pardon my english.

you're absolutely right - but it is a very difficult task and will take some days I think to compile that all together. If somebody is in the mood of doing it - then go! - and it will sure become a "Gold Sticky" in here! :D

this is an excellent point. Although not always 100% true in all cases we should attempt to compile a list of what is what. From my head (probably wrong)

--anime, cartoons (use IVTC) the new decomb should be able to handle difficult anime which in the past wasn't able too.
--PAL (de-interlace...I haven't a clue though)
--concert, music, documentaries (uncheck CCE Upper Field first to elminate jerkiness)
--widescreen, 2:35:1, 1:85:1, anamorphic (use 16:9) unless any of those also contain 'letterbox' then use 4:3
--fullscreen, lettbox + [whatver] (use 4:3)


I think a simple glossary for newbies with extremely easy definitions should be thrown into the newbie faq. I've been thinking to do this for quite awhile. It'd help me out too.

In the meantime check out some of those links on the newbie reference. I know though it's a lengthy read. One of us is gonna have to sum it all up eventually.

Guys, thanks for replys. I'm glad you like the idea.

After doing some reading and thinking I tried to compile that sort of guide but eventualy run into lack of appropriate knowledge :(.

I couldn't find an extensive guide on DVD2SVCD, Doom9 haven't updated his guide yet to show all new available options.

I think we need an extensive guide on all available options: what they do and when to use them (check-unchek).
Maybe my approach to the problem is more time saving and constructive. Ppl won't have to search for bits of info all over the forum.

I might start compiling a branched guide with options for newbie, moderate and advanced users. Just need to think over a little abt the structure of the guide.

I already contributed my "greens" to developer and now I can contribute in other form to community from which allready learned a great deal.

I would like to know how to encode an Interlaced PAL DVD correctly! My last effort, Anime: Ghost in the Shell, judders slightly about every second when the picture was panning up/down or left/right? And what do the extra functions of Smartdeinterlace do?

Any guide that can explain would be appreciated!

I did read the guide on interlacing which stated I don't need to deinterlace the video if I'm going to playback on a TV, this did not work when I tried it, the picture had the combing effect described in the article so I had to try the various deinterlace methods until I found 'VerticalReduceBy2 (PAL)' gave the best, but not perfect, results for my Anime project.

Hope someone can compile a guide, I fell it's much needed for us 'newbie encoders'.

you guys have read dvd2svcd advanced reference I hope?
I really need help with TMPGEnc if anyone wishes to assist. I'm at 0% with that section. Perhaps I'll throw a glossary of terms at the end of the newbie reference. avi2svcd reference is still on the back burner but hopefully I'll work on it within the next couple of weeks. Blame all lack of updates on rtcw addiction.
