View Full Version : Image quality poor at 640*480 res but good at 1024*768???

I have encoded a couple of xvid movies using koepi's feb 17th build and I'm getting some strange pixelation.

Normally, I encode at 640*xxx or lower and use 640*480 32bpp resolution to view my divx films. Usually this works great. :D

Now for the problem. When I view vxid encoded films at 640*480 I notice a 'pattern' (for lack of a better word) as the film is stretched to full-screen. These are not macroblocks but rather like a series of very thin lines in a weave pattern (vertical and horizontal) on the screen.

Even more bizarre, when I stretch the video to full-screen using 1024*768 resolution it looks great!

Is xvid somehow optimized for playback at certain resolutions?

Just thought you guys might find this interesting.

I also thought that it might be a codec conflict but my old divx still look great at 640*480. It's only the xvid encoded films that show this behavior.

Sounds like the Xvid postprocessor, which apparently doesnt really offer any kind of postprocessing such as anti-aliasing, which could cause these symptoms. When viewed at a higher res these symptoms would be reduced.

Thanks Difflam,

I have installed the latest build from Koepi and that seems to have solved the problem. Thanks to -h, koepi et al for spending so much time to optimize this codec. :) Nice work.
