View Full Version : Regression for FLV Streams containing HE-AAC in PotPlayer 1.7.21765

Hi there,
there's been a regression in the new PotPlayer version 1.7.21765 built on 06-07-2022 for HE-AAC tracks carried as FLV streams.
Those kind of streams are generally the direct dump of radio stations 'cause they use the same encoding for both DAB+ and internet.

How to reproduce:
Open PotPlayer, Ctrl + U, paste the following URL http://media-the.musicradio.com/Capital?type=.flv

Expected behavior:
The stream is detected as proper HE-AAC and decoded accordingly.


Actual behavior:
The stream is assumed to be PCM and is therefore decoded as noise as it's wrongly passed through directly to the sound card.


This is a screenshot depicting the issue on version 1.7.21765 which incorrectly assumes the stream to be PCM (when it's not) on the right hand side, while on the left hand side there's version 1.7.21419 which correctly detects it as HE-AAC and decodes it successfully:

I tested it on another system I own running Windows 10 Enterprise x64 and the same issue occurs:

as you can see, the stream is wrongly detected as PCM by the new version and therefore fails to be decoded.


Here's a video depicting the same HE-AAC stream being correctly decoded by version 1.7.21419 first (1st computer) and NOT being correctly decoded by version 1.7.21765 then (2nd computer):

I also asked one of my colleagues, Luca Pappini, to reproduce the issue on his own Windows 10 x64 Enterprise and he had the exact same behaviour I had, thus reproducing the bug.

Unfortunately the PotPlayer forum has been closed, therefore I contacted the developers, but they live in China where western radios like Capital are blocked, so they can't verify nor reproduce. :(

Not so lucky to be fair, I've got 1 reply from 1 person only who couldn't test, no one else replied even if I contacted them on the official mailing list.
Is there any other way I can contact the South Korean devs?

Currently I kept the x86 version not updated and I use that one to listen to the radio, while I upgraded the x64 one which I use for videos etc only, however I'd like the issue to be fixed. It's a shame that they closed the forum 'cause this way people really have no way of contacting them... :(

I Think that PowerDVD v7.0 had similar probs with mono audio, devs extended support for exotic audio streams and in process
messed up bog standard stuff that had worked properley for eons.

Hi there guys.
Up until now, as some of you know, I've been using an older version of PotPlayer x86 specifically to listen to the radio HE-AAC streams carried as .flv due to the bug in the x64 version.
Unfortunately, as I logged in to my workstation this morning, the security overlords uninstalled PotPlayer x86, however they left the x64 version there.
This means that I am now forced to live with the x64 version only which has the decoding issue and I was determined to get it resolved once and for all 'cause I'm a person who follows the routine and I always get my cappuccino in the morning while I check my emails, Jira stories, the backlog etc listening to Capital Breakfast.
In a nutshell: I wasn't gonna let this go.
I traced the issue into this not actually being a decoder error per se but rather a splitter error.
In other words, the splitter in FFMpeg thinks that the incoming stream is PCM and therefore passes on the wrong info and the Open Codecs decode... well... noise.

The solution:
nevcairiel to the rescue!
After pondering a while, I had a wild idea: if the built in source splitter fails, perhaps I can use the good old LAV Filters and make PotPlayer use them.
Of course I have them installed on all my computers since the MPC-HC days, so I was confident I was gonna succeed and succeed I did.
If you have the same issue, here's what you gotta do (assuming you have the LAV Filters installed):

- Open the preferences

- Go to Filter Control, Source/Splitter and click on Filter Management

- Click on "Scan" in the newly opened window and add all the registered filters

- This will populate the DirectShow Filter List, make sure they're all checked and click "ok":

- Now you're gonna be back to the former window, click on flv (or any faulty source splitter you wanna change; in my case it was flv as HE-AAC is carried as that by radio stations) and change it to LAV Splitter Source from the drop down menu:

- Click Apply, ok

et voilą, enjoy the radio with the new version of PotPlayer.
