View Full Version : During the XviD era, what were the most popular denoising+sharpening scripts?

Does anyone remember?
I recall lots of XviD encoded movies having that same denoised + sharpened look, which looked very pleasing to the eyes.
I'm backing up my DVD collection of sci-fi B movies (stuff like I Come in Peace, Omega Cop, Riki-Oh, Crossworlds, Batteries not Included, etc...)
and would like to achieve that same look with XviD and AviSynth scripts.
I'm not interested in modern scripts, just the ones that were used during the XviD's heyday (2004-2008).
Which scripts would you recommend? What were your favorite denoising and sharpening scripts from that period?

I'm pretty sure what you're referring to were clips processed with SeeSaw() which was pretty popular back then.

also:
fft3dfilter and/or hqdn3d for denoising
yadif for deinterlacing
LimitedSharpenFaster for sharpening
Removegrain and undot for light grain removal

My favorite for denoising was PixieDust :)
It was slow though, so I almost always used either undot or the lightest removegrain modes.
I personally didn't get crazy into AviSynth magic until the H.264 days. When I worked at VUDU we had a ton of filter options using degrainmediain if we were in a hurry or fft3dfilter, mdegrain2 etc if we wanted to get serious. We had to deal with a lot of pathological interlaced content as well unfortunately.
We had a lot of early first generation HD masters with tons of noise and mezzanine (~25-50 Mbps MPEG-2) compression artifacts to clean up, and were streaming 1080p with x264 at 2.8 Mbps in 2008 :D

The XviD era? You mean 2001-present? I strongly recommend KNLmeansCL.

I just wanted to thank FranceBB and Selur for their answers.
I've managed to achieve great results with SeeSaw and RemoveGrain.
I have an additional question: besides the SeeSaw script, were there any other techniques that were popular for
enhancing the quality of XviD encoded movies and making them more visually pleasing at low resolution?
Can anyone point me to some AviSynth scripts that I can learn from?

I remember undot (http://avisynth.nl/index.php/UnDot) being useful for that era. :o
