View Full Version : Videos I encode with x265 won't play in PotPlayer, but other x265 videos do

I just tried encoding some videos with x265, but when I try to play them in PotPlayer, it crashes with an unhandled exception.

It may be bug in PotPlayer as VLC plays these videos without problems. However, I am encoding for archival purposes and I'm aiming for maximum compatibility of these files and I can play other x265 videos (videos I didn't encode myself) in PotPlayer without problems.

I'm trying to figure out, if I can make videos compatible with PotPlayer, because 1) it should be possible, since other x265 videos do work and 2) if one player has issues with these files, other devices might also have problems playing them.

I tried encoding with HandBrake, StaxRip and Shutter Encoder. All latest non-beta releases. If I encode with x264 it works, but x265 doesn't. I tried mkv and mp4 containers and it makes no difference. Are there any settings I could try for increased compatibility? Any tips how to approach troubleshooting this? Should try older encoder versions?

Should try older encoder versions?

Yes, if using latest, suggest step back several versions to check if ok [potplayer updated frequently I think],
otherwise if not latest, then try the most recent offering.

Thanks. An old version of PotPlayer worked. Then I tried the latest portable version and it also worked. So, I compared settings and found out I had "ARGB 32" selected as an "output color space" in PotPlayer settings. Changing it to "auto" fixed the issue and all videos now play without issues.
