DivX 5

I've only been encoded for about a month and ive already done 30 films with DivX 4 :)

I hope DivX 5 is good, i'd prefer quality improvments over speed myself. Maybe it'll be so good i'll have to re-do a few of my fav films ;)

Seriously though, what are the rumours saying about DivX 5?

That it can encode 70 fps fullscreen video on a tweaked machine, that it can compress 40% or so better than DivX 4, and that it is going to be able to use B frames in it's encoding and come with a special version of vdub from opendivx for using the B frames.

One can also guess it's going to have better quality encoding and sampling.

They said they already have DivX 6 and 7 planned down the road, I think things are looking pretty good for the codec.

BTW, has anyone else seen the DivX 4.12 Warcraft 3 trailer encoded in 1024x468? 1024?!!! That's nuts. I had no clue media was floating around encoded at higher resolution than DVD. Too bad it's not really higher quality (27 megs for 2.4 minutes), but having the resolution expandibility for when HD DVDs come out is nice.

But you guys should try XviD. It's the best codec for now.
When Divx5 comes out it will be a good fight ;)

i don't really feel like re-encoding all my movies, they're already burnt onto cd too. The rips i've made are good enough, I may re-do a couple sometime though. If only we knew about the new codec earlier, i wouldnt of bothered doing so many films!

P.S I haven't tried XViD, I heard it's more or less on par with DivX 4.12.

What about Micro$oft's new mpeg4 codec? I have my eye on XviD and DivX5. But so far the best quality DivX I have seen are made using Nandub or Fairuse ;) So newer does not = better. But with Hardware decoders and DVD units coming out that support mpeg4.... we gotta find a new codec to use thats gonna work with these new toys!
I'll just sit back and wait and see what happens.

haven't done very many rips with div3, bur i definitely agree that it's superior to div4 in terms of image quality, although a bit blockier. never quite got the hang of nandub, but have tried for ages though.

still, i think xvid is the best compromise between blocking and oversmoothing. give it a try, you might be surprised. i realise you might be a nandub guru, but all the same, you might be surprised ;)

and this way we'd actually get to compare a really good, optimised-t-hell div3 SBC rip with a xvid one.

If you read some of my posts you will see that I have tried XviD, and I like it I have had no problems with it really and it works great for encoding or video capture. I'm just waiting on the beta or full version. I realize that 3.11a is at its end.... and dying! :(

The pain! the pain! poor armageddon dvd has already been ripped and encoded 15 times in different vers of divx 4 and xvid :rolleyes:
