Hi everyone,

let's say you have a DVD/BluRay, it's an old one, and you are afraid, it might not be able to be read anymore in the future, or that you will miss having a drive to read it at some point.
But you also might want to keep the original files, because in the future there might be better video compression formats or better ways to circumvent protections. And imagine you just have the space for doing so, like a NAS.

What would be the 'best' thing to do? So far my thoughts are:
1. make an ISO with all protections left intact, that is DVD/BluRay with CSS/AACS encrypted files
2. make an ISO but remove (only) the main protection, that is DVD/BluRay with removed CSS/AACS encryption
3. make an ISO but remove all kinds of protections, like structure protection, java protection, Region Code, BDPlus, UOPs, etc.
4. to 6. the same as 1. to 3. but not create an ISO file but create the folder structure (thus instead of having one ISO file you have the DVD/BluRay folder structure)

My personal problem with solution 2 or 3 is, that there are many tools out there to remove the protections, but... can I be sure, they do so correctly? Without altering the streams in a harmful way? In a way, that any program in the future can understand the de-protected files without errors? (I'm looking at MakeMKV which shows a warning if you decrypted files with something else before and that there could be errors (still an awesome program!))

What would you recommend?

My choice would be

7. no ISO file, but remove any kind of protections and copy only the main contents (main movie, the extras) in their untouched format (eventually muxed into .mkv)

I see no point in keeping menus, structures, java, playlists and ads/trailers/whatever

ISO + par2 recovery file is also an option (bit rot protection)
