Interlacing / combing that refuses to be fixed

I've thrown a bunch of different filters at this DVD with limited success. QTGMC doesn't do much for this, at least with the settings I tried. The best I could get was with TFM, but still with combing on some motion. Any thoughts as to how to get progressive frames out of this clip?

Hmm, well that does get rid of most of the artifacts. But why does this work? Isn't this just discarding a bunch of detail? I don't understand the principle here.

I wouldn't worry, there are no details left to begin with, do you see a degradation of details?
Can you post a comparison screens of your TFM results?

I think he had some blending plugin to deal with such videos, would be interesting to compare performance of it with BananaLacer.

I cannot believe that video came directly from a DVD. The artifacts are caused by resizing interlaced footage without first deinterlacing. I've seen some bad commercial DVDs, but never anything on this scale.

I've never seen johnny_b's resizing fix, but I'm sure you'll find that the ratio of 576 to 240 will equal some multiple of the height on the "interlacing" artifacts. I put that in quotes because they are not really interlacing artifacts. His fix is very clever, but you obviously WILL be losing detail. But, as he says, if your source is not great to begin with, the detail loss is nothing compared to getting rid of those artifacts which clearly will make it impossible to enjoy the movie.

As another alternative, many years ago, with StainlessS' help, I came up with a different "solution" to the problem. My approach keeps all the detail, but you'd have to tune and adapt my hard-wired solution (i.e., it worked with the bad resizing of the specific clip we were working with). Here is a link to that discussion. Things don't get interesting until the bottom of page 1.

The video you posted, being an MKV file, did not come directly from the DVD. Before you spend time using any of these fixes, it would be better to go back to the DVD and make sure that all you are doing is ripping it, without any other subsequent processing. A pure rip should give you an MPEG-2 file, not an MKV.

[edit]I think that some ripping software may be able to put the video directly into an MKV file format, and if so, you can ignore my comment above.

Well I read most of that thread and that's well beyond my technical capabilities. I'll call the loss of detail 'good enough' for now - at least it's watchable, to your point, and it won't require more of my time to correct than it will take me to actually watch the movie.
