I encoded a 25frame test clip from a dv source to various different formats and found that when divx & xvid is played back the filter or wmp6.4 changes the brightness/contrast..

clip 1 = huffy
clip 2 = divx (1pass quality mode)
clip 3 = xvid (1pass quality mode)

clip 1 played back fine, clip 2 & 3 played back darker.. altho if i loaded clip 2 & 3 into vdub the image was not dark.. must be wmp??

There's a DirectShow filter that you can configure to set your desired levels. Play the video in WMP. Then right click and select Properties. Select the Advanced tab. Highlight the DirectShow filter and select properties. Then you can set the levels. This filter should have been installed automatically during the DivX installation.

Players such as BSPlayer give you more convenient access to these settings.

Thanks neuron, I was just wondering why it doesn't play back the video "As is".

WMP is probably playing your video using a hardware overlay while VDub isn't. Depending on your video chipset and drivers, the brightness of the overlay video might be a bit low.
