MPC MadVR bad rendering comparing to native netflix

Hi,

I'm using a projector, optoma uhd60, which is connected both to PC and to xiaomi mi box s streamer.

When using the streamer's Netflix services playing 4k videos are awesome, colors are spot on, contrast, brightness etc.

When switching to PC, it always has issues with brightness/color saturation and such.

Any idea how to set it right?

P.S. seems like VLC gives better rendering, but it has issues with sound passthrough and 5.1 surround...

I haven't tried to set up an HDR screen on my PC yet, but I've got a few ideas of places you can look.

I'd check the projector when it's looking great, and when it sucks. Try to see if the modes are different somehow. Then try changing settings on the PC until you get the same modes displayed. At least then you might get as good of an output.

I know for standard images, TV's and computer monitors have different possible value ranges. PC's go 0-255, and TV's only expect 15-237 or something. I've seen settings to pick one range or the other. And I remember seeing MadVR has a display type setting. Probably worth looking in there and seeing if you can tweak it.

I tend to try to find a Windows "driver" that matches the output device. Hoping it'll explain what is possible to the OS better than the device reports over the wire.

Windows has an HDR setting that'd need to be turned on (I assume your projector supports that?).

Are you watching an HDR video from the PC, or standard def? I'd try to match source material while you're trying to fix stuff. Limit where the issue might be coming from.

I'd search on Netflix to see the best way to view their service. From what I remember, just looking in a web browser had a limit on quality. I'd hope a native Windows 10 (or 11) application would look great. Though there are issues with some copy protection playback being broken on the latest Intel processor (you can't play 4k blu rays on them anymore...even with the software that used to work).

I assume you've already updated your software as possible. Windows, player version, video drivers, etc. Don't know if your projector can be updated too (firmware maybe?)

I believe VLC uses completely different software to render things, so it makes sense you might get a different result. I assume you're using MPC-HC with the LAV Filters and MadVR? LOTS of things you can tweak there. I'm honestly frustrated at all the options available...
