So far I'm pretty happy with my 256 SDRAM at 145fsb (cas 2, 4way etc) but are you guys finding that going up to 384, or 512 is making a worthwhile diffrence in encoding times?
my CPU is a AMD tbird at 1595, with 2 7200rpm Quantums in RAID 0.

Hi,
I have the somewhat unusual configuration of 448 mb.
It's PC 133 SDRAM....have a 256, a 128, and a 64....
Just added more (and bigger) sticks over time.

What are you encoding in? CCE, for example, is a big memory hog.
I have 512 DDR PC2100.

@dagon
your Q makes no sense if we don't know what you're trying to do with all this memory. which programs, which OS etc etc...

i am pretty sure that WinME, 98 and 95 all start
using swapfiles when they start using more than 128meg of ram.
As far as I can see having more than 256meg makes no difference
to the system at all.
I can say for sure WinXP with 2 x 256 meg of ram works perfectly
and that was very surprising cos 1 of my 256meg SDRAM cards was
completely faulty and would corrupt any data going thru it.
(when it was in a mobo on its own)
How strange there were no problems when I had 1 good + 1 faulty
in the same PC. Could it have been the faulty 256 meg never caused
any problems cos it never had any data going thru it???
I suspect so, and that gives rise to my opinion........
WinXP starts using the swapfile after 128meg is used......
Therefore never using any more memory you stick in.
Please don't start telling me I can edit the registry etc, etc.
to make it use more ram....most peeps can't be bothered.
If it don't use it when u put it in, who are MS trying to fool.

although interesting, i don't think your statement about memory usage is entirely accurate. :sly:
swapping does not mean no more RAM is used. swapping means more RAM is made available when you need it.

384 MB PC133 Apacer CL2.
But at work I recently "had" to install Windows NT 4.0 Sp5 on a Dual Xeon 2Ghz with 2 GB RDRAM.
I'm still dreamin' of it :)

W2k pro..I know xp is a mem hog, and 9x is a joke with mem management.
I was wondering if an extra 128mb or 256mb would make a worthwhile diffrence in encoding times w/gknot..

check how much mem is used while encoding (you know, with ctrl-shift-esc).
this should tell you your needs.

how much is the amount of ram that will speed up video encoding for each os??
and i dont mean only more speed, but also the ability to not close a program when opening another.
i am on the old win98, and only 96m of ram,
and i can easily manage all with less that 200mb allocated(ram+swap)
that is the high limit with my few ram(about ram x 2),
but will be good to not use swap file at all,
then what is the max memory that any os will use with a reasonable(huge) number of apps running?
i tested with
-ulead media studio
+paint shop pro
+virtual dub
+irfan view
+gordian knot
+debugview
+mplayer.exe
+soundforge
+winamp
+mirc
+internet explorer
+many not-video related apps like anticrash, file manager ecc...
around 350 mb of memory allocated,then....i crashed.
so i suppose that in win98 128m is the minimum,192 is good,256 is very good, 384 is excellent and doesnt worth to go beyond....
and for other os?
and what are the most ram-eater apps ??
win2k should be the os that use more memory, what is the max mem usage that you registered with it?(ram+swap, use apps like memturbo, or also the windows monitor to know).

We are using mainly W2K and with at least 512MB ram.
Places I see a diferance :
Adobe Premier, when the project is over 2 hours and becoming complex.
3D-Max 3.1, No problem using more them 1G of ram there.
PhotoShop 6, When working on a A4 size file at 1440DPI - again you can have 1G and ask more.

with 512MB RAM you can easily turn off the swapfile in Win98 SE - it works and you can really feel that it's faster.
When frameserving with avisynth to Nandub, I observed that Nandub uses between 170MB and 230MB RAM in Win98 SE (according to TaskInfo 2000).
However, I bought 512MB for Win2k (which I'm going to install soon) - Win98 is said to have a little less memory performance with more than 384MB RAM

I have 768mb of ram and never use half of it.
