View Full Version : Q: Are there UHD BD Players with Better BD-RB Compatibility?

I'm getting ready to take the plunge into a UHD player. Up until now I've largely been checking guides with recommendations of quality of the player and what formats are supported.
I would also like to know if some hardware is better than others for recognizing and playing UHD BDs burned to BD-25/50 discs created by BD-RB.
Or doesn't it matter?

You may want to read up on makemkv forum.

Hm, I guess I can do better:

This and other forae reported Panasonic DMP-UB900 to be able to read all 3 layers from a UHD-Blu-ray Volume on 100GB BD-R,
next mentioning was Sony UBP-X700, something along the lines of "Stay below 50GB" or "Use only 2 layers of 3 on a 100GB BD-R/RE", depending on player,
and a good part of UHD players not willing to play UHD-Bluray volumes from any BD-R/RE.
Testing soon: 82GB UHD -> 1:1 -> 82GB of a BD-RE-TL 100GB -> Oppo 205 jailbreak
and if that fails
82GB UHD -> BD-RB -> 64GB of a BD-RE-TL 100GB (2 layers of 3) -> Oppo 205 jailbreak
and if that fails
82GB UHD -> BD-RB -> 48GB of a BD-RE DL 50GB -> Oppo 205 jailbreak
To me it looks as if UHD drive makers had to agree about lockout of the following playback caps in official UHD firmware:
1: total lockout of UHD playback from BD-R/RE media, no matter the pitch (Samsung ?)
OR
2: lockout of UHD playback from all layers of the offending BD-R/RE TL 112nm pitch while allowing DL pitch 149nm
OR
3: partial lockout of UHD playback from the 3rd layer of the offending BD-R/RE TL 112nm pitch (SONY?) while allowing DL pitch 149nm
and by chance the first Panny might not have any of these enforced.
