View Full Version : DirectShow player problems with the new HALLOWEEN UHD

Hi guys, I have received Shout's new version of John Carpenter's classic from 1978 and both MPC-BE and HC have problems with it. I think I have tested all possible combinations of players,
filters and renderers.

Description of the problem:
There are 5 audio tracks on this disc and the players load it this way, but:

- all 5 tracks are listed as dts hd-ma stereo although there is a 7.1 and a 5.1 track on it.

- the movie plays only when one of the first two audio tracks is selected. When I select one of the others playback just stops. Going back to track 1 or 2 makes playback resumes.

My first thought was that I got a bad disc but VLC handles this disc perfectly !! Does anyone maybe know what the problem could be ?

Thanks, here is the info. So the player looks for the 7.1 track and gets confused because it can't be found ?

I have inspected the disc also with MakeMKV and if I am not mistaken I think I know what the problem is.
On the disc are the main movie file and others like one with the jingle for the production company, etc. All these files have the same audio tracks configuration.

However, when BE and HC loads the files they seem to create a 'first chapter' and here 5 dts-hd ma stereo are wrongly created and then it segues into the movie and this seem to confuse the player
because the audio tracke are then quite different because audio 3 is then trueHD. Track 4 and 5 are then ac3 !!

As I said this affects both MC BE and HC so the bug seem to be somewhere deep in the original MPC code base.

Can you load just 00000.m2ts into your player and tell us what happens?

In case of MPC-HC the bluray parsing in the player itself is limited to finding the longest playlist (generally the main movie). The playback itself is handled by LAV Filters. That doesn't support the audio format of a track changing during the movie. You would need to ask nevcairiel if he can add support for that.

MPC-BE opens and identifies audio tracks correctly.

P.S. You use LAV Filters in MPC-BE ?

That doesn't support the audio format of a track changing during the movie. That's why I suggested to just load the last M2TS as the first two seem to be short fluff that might contain the offending audio.

Thanks for all the suggestions - please give me a little time to look at them carefully.

@Aleksoid. Thanks for the screenshot and I think this shows the problem quite clearly !
The runtime for you is 1:31:12 -> so without the jingles.
My runtime is always 1:31:46. How can I make sure that the only the movie file gets loaded ?

Aleksoid1978
11th November 2021, 10:14
Open 00000.m2ts directly.
Default (longest) playlist 00002.mpls contain 00006.m2ts + 00005.m2ts + 00000.m2ts. 00006.m2ts and 00005.m2ts is short and contain only DTS-HD MA Stereo.
MPC-BE/HC players not support parse/change audio/video/subtitles tracks "on the fly".

Confirmed, thanks - however this only worked on my system when I deleted the libaacs-files from the BE (and HC) folders. This gave me some headaches.

Would it be possible to add the ability that BE just ignores such files and jumps directly to the main file within a mpls - or maybe just ignores/removes the audio in such files to avoid this problem ??

No - all information inside .mpls/.clpi files. Need single file - open .m2ts directly.

I have a new problematic blu-ray and instead of starting a new thread I thought it would be helpful to have these issues in one thread.
O.K., the blu-ray contains the movie and two trailers and with VLC I can access and watch all content.

With MPC-BE and HC I can fortunately watch the movie without any problems, however when I try to watch the trailers for example via -> navigation the player loads for a few seconds and then just closes !
I can, however, open and watch the trailers by opening the mpls for them directly.
Any ideas what might be causing this ?

Just tested this HALLOWEEN UHD again but with the mpv-player and forks of it like implay or mpc-qt and surprisingly they show the same behaviour like BE and HC !!
I thought it was directshow problem only.

Is there any way to find out what exactly VLC does differently ?

Well, the VLC team did care !!

They don't care. That is most likely accidentally working in VLC.

Grimsdyke
23rd February 2023, 18:57
That is most likely the result of years long experiences since the times of Windows 98 with many, many awkwardly authored DVD releases and knewing it won't get much better with blu-ray !!

Klaus1189
23rd February 2023, 19:50
Can you post link of release, i buy and test also this special BD

Grimsdyke
24th February 2023, 20:35
It's the Shout Factory release from the USA and that would be way too expensive just for testing.
However, the included BD and UHD are identical in contents and so both are effected by this issue. I could send you the BD only and you could then return it after your tests.

But on the other hand, what for ? Alex confirmed in this thread that the issue exists, he is just not interested in fixing this bug.
What I find so surprising is that he and also NEV seem to be not even curious to, at least, look what VLC does better ! I mean VLC is open source, maybe it's just a few lines of code to port and add ?
Well, I am not a programmer so I can unfortunately only report problems.

This is not the first disc with this problem, I know exactly what the disc does and how it could be fixed. Its just not really worth the complexity to do so in the current design of Blu-ray support in LAV Splitter.

Grimsdyke
1st March 2023, 13:18
Thanks for these infos !! So a complete fix would be way too much work for just a few problematic discs and only me annoyed by it Fair enough. :D

But how about a workaround ? Let's say, just as a thought, LAV sees that the disc HALLOWEEN with a bdmv folder created on 12.08.2021 22:32 is loaded and knows that 00002.mpls is "bad".
So instead it uses a new mpls with a 0000.m2ts + 0006.m2ts + 0005.m2ts sequence. (I mean, I wouldn't care about any issues after the movie is finished ![)
Or maybe a mpls with only 0000.m2ts ?

Again, just an idea as a starting point because I really do not know how many lines and hours of coding this would take..

@devs - stumbled over this earlier today.

MPLS2JSON.exe
– converts .mpls playlist, .clpi clip information file or .bdjo BD-J object file into human&machine readable JSON file, or
– converts .json file into binary .mpls, .clpi or .bdjo file. This reverse operation can be used for modification of the content of the .mpls/.clip/.bdjo file.
