View Full Version : Converting VHS (analog) into digital (ideally some .mp4 variant)

Hey guys,

I have very old VHS-C tapes, from the early 1990s to
1998 or so, about 6 of them. These are in that small format
which you were able to place into a handheld SONY camcorder.

Unfortunately I discarded all VHS tapes already back in 2004
or so; and I also discarded almost all of my old DVDs as
well (storing these on harddiscs + .mp4 is just so much more
efficient than having to sift through tons of DVDs). So I neither
have VHS players nor DVD players.

Now I would like to convert these old VHS-C tapes into digital,
but I currently have nothing - no VHS-C camcorder, no VHC
player ... I already read that local providers offer conversions;
the fee is about 20 euros per VHS-C tape so this would be about
120 Euro. That's not the end of the world, but then I also read on
different webforum sites that there are devices that may be useful
here. These seem to have these four old cables ... the white one
and red one and yellow one (tip of the cable) ... usually advertised
as VHS to DVD converters. But I suppose these would not suffice;
I'd probably need some player. Or is there a way to avoid having
a full player? I'd only need a device that would roll about the
device on these VHS-C cartridges ...

These look like so, just to refresh people's mind:

For instance this linux mint forum talks about this:

The cost of these is about 30 euro. But I'd still need to somehow
play these I suppose, so I need a player?

What I am trying to get here is to calculate how much money this
would cost. It may well be that I'd even exceed that ~120 euro
and with the time investment, it may be cheaper to delegate
this onto other people - this is the Plan A anyway.

But! Since I am an old tinker dude as well, I wanted to first ask
for people's opinion, in particular if you were to ONLY have
VHS-C, and, let's say you live on a far away island - which hardware
would be needed for this, and which one would be reasonably cheap?

Of course you need a VHS player $?, and a converter VHS-C to VHS ~30 $
