View Full Version : Monitor calibration, what to use?

Hi there,
some of my colleagues actually asked me if I had any suggestions about which probe and pattern generator to use to test monitors. Of course, by "monitors" I mean professional ones, so broadcast ones with SDI input mostly from Sony and some of them from Eizo. I clearly said that I had no idea but that I'll ask, so here I am passing the ball to you: what do you use to calibrate professional monitors?

i1Display Pro (eodis3) is the cheaper option I recommend.

The more expensive i1 Pro 3 Plus is the optimal option, but maybe get an i1Display Pro to go with it to speed things up a bit. :)

I see... Keep in mind that it's gonna be a professional solution, so price isn't an important factor, we have budget.

I've been talking to my boss about this and he said that he wouldn't trust anything other than a Minolta: https://sensing.konicaminolta.us/us/products/ca-410-display-color-analyzer/
And the Io 4K from Aja to be connected to a pattern generator: https://www.aja.com/products/io-4k?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIgb-h17m88QIVk4XVCh3UuAXIEAAYASAAEgL1n_D_BwE
Therefore I think all is left is to find a software that actually generates patterns in both SDR and HDR.
What do you think about those two solutions?

a hardware pattern generator is a toy these days.
just think about it a pattern is a paint generated RGB image.

if price doesn't matter just get a jeti https://www.jeti.com/Products/Spectroradiometer/specbos1211-2 for correction and cheap colorimeter you trust.

the jeti should be fast enough to do the verification and calibration if you don't do 100+ readings.
for pattern generator just use the nearly for sure already present calman with madVR or displaycal with argyllcms

Why though? Are you using some odd display technologies that need a spectroradiometer? Would you really get visually distinct results?

The i1 Display Pro Plus looks like a pretty great option, pair it with a higher end software package (Calman, ColourSpace, etc.) and go. Colorimeters have come a long way, I don't think you need a full spectrometer to get professional results anymore.

But there are a lot of options and I have never tested any of the real spectroradiometers. :)
