I tried to find something with google, some time ago, and I was literally flooded with similar sounding but completely different issues or with the classical MS-type answer of "try rebooting your computer".

The question is that after a while, and I think after the computer went into idle, after coming back from idleness the attached USB drive "is there" and sometimes it can list the last folder (which I assume is the cached memory) but it refuses to accept any commands. The LED is constantly lit.

Once I got an answer that there might be an issue with some Toshiba HDDs and the USB power management. Other manufactures were less affected. I did the seeting of Always on for USB, and things went OK for a while. It started again however the settings are the same.

Has anyone any idea, besides, of course, shut down the computer?
I hate removing the HDD this way, although it was set for safe removal.

PS: Windows 8.1. 64b.
Now that I think again, it may that I had w10 when I solved the issue, but after a crash the computer recovered back into 8.1.
