hi,
well, it is always said that u have to decide on ur own what is the best codec for u, but I've seen so many ppl using Xvid -
is Xvid the best alternative codec? - or also better than DivX?

i think xvid is already superior to div4, in the sense that it's got better image quality for filesize, to my eyes anyway, and is not quite as blocky as div3 without noise filtering.
*and* thanks it being open source (and the efforts of people like isibaar, -h, koepi, nic, and now foxer) it's developing like a bad pandemic, so there's always a new build to look forward to!
yaaay! (unbridled glee)

XVID gets my vote! Dont get me started about DivX4.xx  its the buggiest unstable codec I have ever used. Even have a friend with a dual P3 setup and he has problems to.... so I guess its not just my AMD cpu
I will test this DivX5 and if it still has the same problems I will spread it on every forum I use!
I guess we sit back and wait. Micro$oft is releasing there new codec.... XVID is being developed, and DivX5 is coming.... and mpeg4 hardware decoders are coming and home DVD units are gonna support mpeg4. Hmmmmm just gonna have to wait and see how this all turns out.
I wanna thank all the people that are working on XVID. Great work guys and thank you!!! :D

It's just the next version of the legitimate divx codec by DivxNetworks. The successor of divx4.
