View Full Version : SVCD -> CVD subtitles conversion

I created quite a lot of SVCDs with DVD2SVCD. Most of them have two audio streams and subtitles. In the last days I created some more SVCDs using DVD2SVCD 1.0.6b4. This weekend, I watched the first one and noticed that subtitles didn't work. My fault: I selected 'SVCD style' on the subtitle tab. My player (Scott 838) only supports CVD. As I already deleted the original VOBs, I wonder whether there is a possibility to extract the SVCD-subs (after ripping the SVCDs) and mux them as CVD-subs. I know how to author and burn afterwards, but how to I get the subs out of the SVCD-mpeg?
Hope the solution isn't too complicated...

you cannot extract the subtitles from a svcd (if such thing could be done, probably a svcd player software with subtitle support could exist also). You can do the following:
1) search for the desired subtitle in the net. There are places where you can find a lot of those;
2) must probably these subtitles are not in CVD (Iauthor) format. You will need to convert it with some tools, available in doom9`s download homepage;
3) take the svcd mpeg file. Demux its video and audio tracks. This will remove the svcd subtitle stream;
4) remux the audio+video with bbmpeg;
5) mux the subtitles with submux.
obs: You can use Iauthor instead of steps 4 and 5.
to get some more informations about how to use these tools, read its readme files and have a look at doom9's guides also.

A possible solution to your problem that I have not tested is as follows.
You can use Vcdxrip, included in VCDImager, to dissambly the SVCD and obtain the mpeg file. Then use vob2sub (an utility included in the submux package that allows you to extract subs from mpeg files) to obtain the bmp and sub files of each stream of subtitles. Finally, you can try to mux the obtained subtitles as cvd-style subtitles using submux (or possibly IAuthor muxer). You can find a gui for vob2sub in http://less.filetap.com/

When I do that extraction process, vob2sub always hangs.
I'm trying to extract subs in CVD format to convert them to SVCD format on a NTSC SVCD.
While doing the job, vob2sub generates some BMP files which are totally ok, but then it hangs after some time. And, it is never at the same place !
Has anybody gone thru that problem before ?
Is there any other way to extract CVD streams ?
Thanks

Just written some time after the refering post was done, and just for the sake of not confusing any one that might arrive to the thread, at today date:
"currently 30th May 2002 we have no tools to extract subs from SVCDs at play time, but we do have them to extract them (vob2sub). So I think the information above said concerning sub extraction from SVCDs is not valid any more"
This was edited some hours later to the original posting.
I am using the following process trying to validate the subbing process:
a) get a DVD chapter; process it. get the subs and the .sub file. Get a SVCD including the .mpg muxed with subs.
b) extract the subs from the .mpg with vob2sub (comes with submux, you need cygwin1.dll).
(Should you have not the .mpg file, I think you can copy it from the SVCD, might be wrong? Should I be wrong, one friend has used vcdxrip, you have the .exe in the DVD2SVCD bundle.
Should you only have an image, use Daemon-Tools ;-))
c) compare extracted subs from .mpg with those from DVD chapter.
g) get conclusions.
Further info also in the subtitles specific forum
Look out:
as per http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?threadid=26183

Posted by dvd2svcd on 29th May 2002 19:13:
bmp 1 and 2 is not in the list because they start within the first 4 seconds of the movie, and no players support subtitles within that timeframe afaik.
------------------------------------------------------
That means that perhaps the initial 4 seconds subs are not in the SVCD if was done with DVD2SVCD (beware of what version ;-)
also:
aas per http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?threadid=25175
(both comments done by New Age)
----------------------------------------------------------
vob2sub always detects less subtitles (never extracts the last subtitle)
So it seems that vobsub has problems extracting only CVD style subtitles.

@Bach,
ok, you are right, I did not verify the date. I read the full thread as was triggered by nick ctrl.
I thought not saying any further and do not plan to say anything more than this very post on this matter, as do not like to get into flamming wars. But would like to explain. I would edit my previous post later.
Anyhow, I tried to point politely that point was not correct. Was not trying to judge about Mozart.
Why did I wanted to do that?
a) statement was incorrect and worse it IS incorrect.
b) moderators always ask all to search before asking (quite correctly), so I do not want any reader got misled
c) most important, I thing that in the subs area there is, in general, not speaking about anybody, not much knowledge, seems to be more black art than science. Things work marginally and improvements are done (mostly) by pure trial and error. Until recently many people belived their player was unable to show subs. Lately, it seems that more people is being able to make their players show subs. So, to the end, we have to try to refresh the ideas, and the subs discussion, in general, perhaps hast just awoken.
Anyhow,
thanks for the pointing, I will edit my post to be clearer.

@DVD2SVCD
sorry but I do not follow you. I was not wishing to disturb anybody. Hope it is not the case with you ?
Later addition
Perhaps the funny comes from Bach saying " ... he (Mozart) didnīt know ..."?
Well, Nos have not been so long in the forum to recognize the joking ...
... but now Nos know :D :D
(for the new ones _search the forums looking in the text for BACH AND MOZART_)
@Bach
Bach, Nos hope you can find some time to tell Mozart that Our intentions were and are heartly good ... as Nos hope can be deducted from Our editions to my initial posting ...

(I know, perhaps to explicit, but do not want many people losting much time ...)
Hope this heals the matter.

@Bach: In all fairness he did say "Later Edition", thereby informing that this was an edited post.

Thanks for your constructive critics and for your politeness. Although my first Internet email address is almost 20 years old (yeah, ... I am in my forties ...)
catching up the nettiquete rules of a place is not an easy thing. And keeping always all rules in mind is not easy either.

Well really chaps, it is a pleasure learning with you and also discovering your warm hearts and funny side.

Humm... now you are into the 2nd fault in forum recommended behaviour - the first one was the date issue. You cannot edit a post if already exists an answer/reply for it. This is too bad. Don't do it again, ok?
-----------------------------------------------------------
ok, I will not do it again as you ask me. By the way, I promise, I have looked for those but, where in h*ll are those rules?
Err ...
As I am already writting ... (do you know about self expression incontinency?)
Some feedback for moderators and any other newbie helper:
_after 20 interruptions to the writting I decided to open a new post, as I was unsure of the thinking thread and not breaking any further forum rule_

Hi again,
Do not really know where to post this but feet in the thread although not in its title.
One of my problems as newbie is that I would like the existence of more destilled knowledge. Searching the threads one finds usually many references, with correct answers by their time but also uncorrect or obsolete.
Solution: none without effort.
Perhaps all threads should be closed by a moderator pointing or sending to Q&A responsibles to useful new things / changes / ampliation of info / etc.
Or perhaps marking as obsolete the thread if so.
Or perhaps being marked by the Q&A responsibles as obsolete when incorporated.
Yeap, quite more work at the beginnig but also will reduce it later. Trades off? Do not know.
Perhaps the idea of several forums is better: one for posting (a "mover" moderator moves it to any of the three other): learners (were all repetitive answers go), advanced (for how do I do this obscure thing), technical (for techies and savviies very detailed things), potential bugs, etc. This, would reduce effort to the previous closing policy.
Ok, there are other additional measures that I will present elsewere (how toīs _not doom guides, pointers, etc.)
Thanks again,

I have checked that DVD2SVCD has removed submux from its page ... as submux is being phased out somehow by WinSubMux I think it is correct ... but what about vob2sub ?
While it lasts I have opened something temporal ...
You can find vob2sub (as coming from DVD2SVCD home page)
in
http://members.lycos.co.uk/dck21mbis/
username: testsamples (or testsample)
(note: test samples are not going now ... yet)
(note2: use subs always you are asked for ... :devil: )
Later Edit:
well, I knew I knew ... you can get the "original"
source code in
